1 Solving Multi-Step Equations

2 Find the Error Sarah is trying to solve the equation -7/8x = 23 Here is her work: - 7/8x = 24 (7/8) -7/8x = 24 (7/8) x = 21 What important step did she forget?

3 To Solve: Undo the operations by working backward.
Ex: x + 9 = 6 5 Ask yourself: What is the first thing we are doing to x? The second thing? Recall the order of operations as you answer these questions. dividing by 5 adding 9 To undo these steps, do the opposite operations in opposite order.

4 Ex: x + 9 = 6 5 First subtract 9. x + 9 - 9 = 6 - 9 x = -3
Then multiply by 5. (5) x = -3(5) x = -15 ! Check: -15/5 + 9 = 6 -3 + 9= 6 its true

5 Let’s try another! 6 - 3x = 21 write the equation
6 + (-3x) = rewrite the left side as addition subtraction property of equality -3x = simplify -3x = 15 division property of equality x= simplify Check: (-5)=21 6-(-15)=21 21=21 true

6 Try a few on your own. You must show all steps and check your work.
5z + 16 = 51 14n - 8 = 34 4b + 8 = 10 -2
