The referendum on whether Britain should remain in or leave the European Union.

2. Democratic rights in Britain
At the age of 18 or over you can vote in:
Local council elections
General elections for the national government
Referendums on specific issues such as the EU.

3. Voting for our political leaders or on specific issues is a relatively new thing
500 years ago, politicians weren’t elected and the country was a dictatorship.

4. 200 years ago, less than 5% of the British population could vote.
The Peterloo Massacre of 1819 saw 19 people killed and hundreds injured at a peaceful protest where people campaigned for the vote.

5. Gaining the vote All men over 21 gained the vote in 1911.
But not women!

6. The women’s suffrage campaign
The suffragettes campaigned vigorously and at times illegally.
They burned down buildings, smashed windows and polluted the water supply with purple dye.
Emily Davison died being knocked over at the Derby by the King’s horse.

7. Men and women gained the right to vote over the age of 21 in 1928.

9. It isn’t worth voting because politicians are no good!
This is a generalisation. There are many caring and honest politicians in Britain.
