The Parthenon What is it? A temple dedicated to the Virgin (Parthenos) Goddess Athena, Matron Goddess of Athens Where is it? On the Acropolis (citadel) in Athens, Greece When was it built? 5th Century B.C.E Why was it built? To replace a previous temple that was destroyed by the Persians (like in 300) and to celebrate Athena, protector of the Athenians

Terms To Know Doric Order – One of the three styles of Classical architecture. Easily recognized by triglyph and metope decoration above the columns and the smooth capitals (tops) of the columns. Triglyph and metope – Alternating blank spaces (metopes) and triple lines (triglyphs) above the columns in the Doric Order Peripteral – Columns that go all the way around the temple, not just the front Frieze – Decorative sculpture carved into the front of the temple above the columns
