1 Do Now Copy the HW for tonight. Timeline worksheet.
(You will get it during class.) Clear your desk, get a pencil out, and get ready for the quiz! *Class participation forms

2 After the quiz Using Timelines Read the title.
1. Check it over! 2. Place it face down on the back table. 3. Grab a Timeline worksheet from the back table. 4. Open the textbook to page 10. 5. Read through each of the 4 steps for using a timeline. 6. On the worksheet, copy the following (just the steps): Using Timelines Read the title. Determine the time span. Determine the intervals of time. Study the events.

3 How to use a timeline Read the title. Determine the time span.
Tells you what the timeline is about. Determine the time span. Where does the timeline start? 100 BC? Where does the timeline end? 546 AD? Determine the intervals of time. Like the inch/centimeter marks on a ruler. Study the events. Each event has a date- what happened when?

4 Using Timelines 1. Study the title of the timeline. Based on the title, do you think this timeline will show a long or short time span? (In other words, will it cover a lot of years or not a lot of years?) Long time span 2. Figure out the ‘time span.’ Find the beginning of the timeline at the very left part. (Notice that the date is followed by B.C.) Then, find the endpoint of the timeline at the very right. (Notice that the date is followed by A.D.) Write the time span below. 4,000 BC – 2,000 AD

5 5. Find 1 A.D. on the timeline. What is the event?
3. What is the interval?. Look at the dates marked by white lines on the timeline. Each date is spaced apart equally. How many years are between each date? 1,000 years 4. Study the events on the timeline. How can you tell whether some events happened closer together than others? How close the events are on the timeline; and their dates. 5. Find 1 A.D. on the timeline. What is the event? Jesus Christ is born.

6 A.D. and B.C.? B.C. and A.D. are the abbreviations used to label a date. B.C. stands for “Before Christ. A.D. is Latin, Anno Domini, which means “in the year of our Lord.” It is the year Jesus Christ was born. The calendar that started this trend was created around 500 AD.

7 Recently, there has been a push to change the abbreviations so that they do not refer to any specific religious figure. The new abbreviations are: B.C.E. year 1 C.E. Before Common Era Common Era The new abbreviations do not change how we date history, it just makes the labels more acceptable for people of all religious beliefs.

8 Closure In your closure section… Two things I learned today were….
I still have a question about….

9 Do Now DO NOT TOUCH THE PAPER OR JUMP OVER IT
Sit near the front of the room. Take out the HW from last night: Timeline worksheet Review the answers with the people next to you.

10 1. Earliest Human Discoveries
million years ago – 2,000 AD

11 3. Important Developments from the Ancient World
4. 9,000 BC – 1 CE 5. 3,000 years 6. The time span of the first timeline covers too many years and these events would be too close together.

12 Rules about the Timeline
DO NOT jump over the timeline- walk around. No shoes on the paper! Only pencils should be used. EVERYONE must help. If you are not helping or if you are being disruptive, you will sit out of this activity.

13 A Very Important Question…
Exactly how long have humans been around? Was most of our history spent like cavemen? Or is most of human time advanced? Like today?

14 Activity for Today As a class, we are going to create a timeline of ALL of human history! We will include only the most important dates! Year 1 500,000 BC 30,000 BC 8,000 BC 2,000 AD Modern humans evolved. Humans migrated to North America. Farming begins. Today.

15 Steps for Making the timeline
500,000 BC 30,000 BC 8,000 BC 1 AD 2,000 AD Modern humans evolved. Humans migrated to North America. Farming begins. Common Era begins. Today. Create a title: TIMELINE OF HUMAN HISTORY Tells you what the timeline is about. Determine the time span. Where does the timeline start? 500,000 BC? Where does the timeline end? 2,000 AD? Determine the intervals of time. How do we make the #’s easier to use? Add the events.

16 Math Attack! Each CM = 1,000 years So each meter stick = 100,000 years
500,000 BC  2,000 AD

17 Understanding how long humans HAVE NOT been farming and have been “cavemen”
Look at the timeline. What does the timeline teach you? Did it surprise you? Why or why not?

18 Understanding how long humans HAVE NOT been farming and have been “cavemen”
What can you say about how long humans DID NOT farm compared to how long humans HAVE BEEN farming? For most of human history, we have NOT been farming. Farming is a recent development that has clearly made our world WAY more advanced than it had been before.

19 CLOSURE Were you surprised by the timeline? What did you learn?
Why or why not? What did you learn?
