Multifocal adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS), formerly known as bronchioloalveolar cell carcinoma (BAC). (A, B) Two chest CT sections obtained approximately 2 years apart demonstrate a ground glass nodule in the right upper lobe with interval growth between the two studies. (C, D) Axial chest CT sections from the same patient demonstrate additional ground glass nodules bilaterally. Biopsy of one of the lesions demonstrated atypical pneumocyte hyperplasia (more commonly known as atypical adenomatous hyperplasia or AAH) which is thought to be a precursor lesion of adenocarcinoma of the lung. However, multiple nodules had demonstrated interval growth and are most consistent with AIS. Several remained stable in appearance and are most consistent with AAH. The progression of AAH to adenocarcinoma is further discussed elsewhere in this text. Source: Cardiothoracic Imaging, Introduction to Diagnostic Radiology Citation: Elsayes KM, Oldham SA.
