Air Navigation Project – Capstone Event at End of Six-Week Unit
This project integrated math (geometry), science (astronomy and EM spectrum), aerospace technology (navigation systems) and engineering (designing a route). This Project Used Flight Simulators Extensively Academy of Aerospace and Engineering

Project Requirements Work in pairs and fly Cessna 172 on flight simulator—each student must fly same amount of the route. Student(s) who are not flying are working to help navigate, tune VORs, and keep time. 6/6 and 6/7 – Plan a 100 NM flight from one airport to another—requirements: Route is visible on our charts of the NYC area. Pick 3 way points (in lat/long) along with departure and arrival airports with turns of at least 45 degrees at each way point. Find distance and time between way points. Plan a VOR fix at each way point between the airports. 6/8 and 6/9 – Fly and navigate your route—requirements: Use pilotage along the entire route. Use dead reckoning along the entire route. Tune and use VORs along entire route to determine fixes at way points.
