Poison gas was the most feared of all weapons in World War I.
It could be used on the trenches when no attack was going on. There was no shelter from poison gas. Weather & wind posed a major problem.

A poison gas attacks meant soldiers had to put on crude gas masks that were often ineffective.
Poison Gas could cause blindness, burning & melting of skin, and even death Many soldiers would be in agony for days or weeks before he finally dying from their injuries.

Trench Diseases The health of soldiers deteriorated in the trenches. Not only did soldiers die from battle wounds, they also died from diseases that spread throughout the trenches. They were caused from a lack of hygiene, stress and an cold, wet and dirty environment. Diseases ranged from common colds to , trench foot, trench mouth and shell shock.
