Flex Schedule -Flexible scheduling of the library provides no formal schedule. -Students can come and check out materials whenever they need to. -Instruction relies on the librarian collaborating with the classroom teacher. -This flexibility allows the librarian and teacher to work in-depth with students rather than just once every week. -Students from a particular class or grade level may come down for several days in a row to work on a unit, and then it may be a few weeks before they are back for the next project.
9
Flex Schedule -On a flex schedule the librarian must be the “proactive element” that goes out to work with teachers. -The librarian needs to attend collaboration times with the teachers and find ways that they can work together. -50% of elementary libraries use a variation of the flex schedule including Southwest Allen County Schools in Fort Wayne. -SACS has been using this type of schedule for the last ten years with non-certified librarians. -A flexible schedule library can accommodate many classes at the same time doing different things including research, selecting books, and recreational reading.

Collaboration -Attend collaboration times with each grade level or set a time to meet with them (a flex schedule allows for this). -Actively seek out opportunities to work with teachers on projects or lessons in their classroom or in the library by talking to them at lunch, in the hallway, during school duties, in the mailroom, or in the workroom. -Work with and support the computer lab tech. -Keep track of all your collaborations using the collaboration form including classroom visits, projects, reading time, and classes coming to the library to check out books.
