2 Types of Relationships
Friendships: significant relationship between 2 people based on caring, respect, trust, and consideration that you generally share similar interests, hobbies, and other friends. They become whom you share your needs, wants, emotions, and confidences. They give you a sense of belonging, help define you, and reinforce your values. What do you look for in a friendship? Do you expect people to change to your beliefs or do you meet in the middle? Why?

3 Types of Relationships
-Platonic friendship: friendship of the opposite sex which there is affection but not a couple or physical attraction. -Casual friendship: peers who share something in common but no deep emotional bonds. What is more important to you? why?

4 Types of Relationships
Close friendship: strong emotional ties; comfortable sharing thoughts, feelings and experiences; mutual respect; trust; support; loyalty. When problems arise, they will work hard to repair. Clique- small circle of friends (usually with similar background or tastes) who exclude people who are seen as outsiders. May share same attitudes, wear similar clothing, meet regularly, engage in similar behaviors.

5 Effects of Relationships
Positive- people develop sense of belonging. Negative- Discouraged from independent thinking, or encouraged/influences in bad risky behaviors.

6 How to maintain these relationships
Be loyal (trust and dependability) Encourage each other (acknowledge accomplishments and help during set- backs) Respect each other (keep promises, show you care, don’t take for granted)

7 What can cause friction in relationships?
Peer Pressure- influences from others same age Positive- encouragement, avoiding risky behaviors, role models Negative: can involve many things like Harassment: persistently annoying others thru name calling, bullying, etc. Manipulation: indirect, dishonest way to control or influence others.

8 Common methods of manipulation:
Mocking or teasing Guilt trips Bargaining- offering to make a deal to get what 1 wants Flattery or praise to influence Bribing- promising $ or favors if they do what is asked Threats- promising violence or negative consequence if they don’t do what is asked Blackmail- threatening to reveal embarrassing or damaging information

9 Negative results of Peer pressure
Resisting Negative Peer Pressure Avoid it Develop friends who respect your health and well being Refuse to join bad groups Be responsible for your decisions

10 Review of refusal skills
Refusal Skills: communication strategies that help you say no and urged to take part in behaviors that are unsafe, unhealthy, or go against your values. State your position Suggest alternatives Stand your ground

11 Dating and Setting Limits
Infatuation- Exaggerate feelings of passion of another person. Affection- Feeling of fondness of someone. Can be expressed by communication, holding hands, hugging and spending quality time. Purpose of Dating Preparation for marriage responsibilities Experiences in different roles in relationships

12 Setting Limits Curfew- set time in which you should be home. Set by your parents to help protect your health and safety Limit on age and people you date Limit on places, travel and what actions will be taken Limits of stages of affection

13 Setting limits Establish your priorities
Set personal limits on how to express affection Share your thoughts with your boo Talk with trusted adult Avoid High pressure Situations Do not use alcohol/drugs (interferes with thinking clearly) Reasons to practice abstinence so these do not occur: Legal implications Effects on Physical Health- unplanned pregnancy & STDs Effects on Emotional Health- loss of self-respect, dishonesty, feelings of guilt & regrets. Effects on Social Health- Bad reputation, tension between family.
