Objective: Problem Solving
A Cents of Floating Concept: Critical thinking and decision making are areas in which youth need practical experience. The ability to visualize a problem and to create a solution are not innate abilities within most of students today. Working with a partner to verbalize ideas and make decisions regarding problems are skills that must be developed in youth. This activity gives them a tangible outcome to work with and a challenge to explore.
13
Basics: Time: 30 minutes and discussion time Materials:
10 drinking straws for each team of two 50 inch of masking tape for each team of two 1 pan of water 100 pennies OR 80 nickels
14
Guidelines Have each student pair up with one partner.
Each team of two will get 10 straws and 25 inches of tape. Explain that they will have 7 minutes to design and build a raft. They may only use the straws and tape. The objective is to build a raft that will hold the most amount of change before sinking. When they have finished building their rafts or the time has run out, they will bring their rafts to the pan of water for the “official float.” After the first round of floats, give them a second chance to remake their rafts and try for a better design.
15
Discussion How much change were you able to float on your raft with the first try? Second try? What kind of design ideas did you have? Was it hard for you and your partner to agree on the design? Did you stick with your original design concept? If not, what changes did you make? Was your original design the best possible or did you make improvements as you went along? Did you watch other teams to see what they were doing? Is getting ides from others cheating or is it permissible? What changes did you make when you created your second raft Did one of you dominate the building or was it a shared experience? What frustrations did you have during the activity? What does the word “compromise” have to do with the activity? How can we apply this to real life? To this class? Would you like a job where you have to make decisions or be told what to do? Why? Why do you think it is important for our leadership class to be build with a strong, secure foundation?

Cell phones. Let’s chat. Are absolutely NOT allowed in my classroom unless I have given you specific permission in certain circumstances. They must be kept on silent in your bags that go in the cubbies in the hallway. If I see a cell phone out: the first time will be a warning and confiscation to the end of the school day. the second time will be a write up and sent to Mr. Powell, the Dean of Students. A call home to your parents will also happen. the third time will be a write up, a call home to your parents, and after school suspension.

Your Responsibilities
When you arrive every day, put your phones and bags in the cubbies and have a seat in your assigned desk with your journal and pencil before the bell rings.
