EVALUATE A CASUALTY INSTRUCTOR: REFERENCE STP

You are given a soldier who has signs and/or symptoms of an injury.
Conditions You are given a soldier who has signs and/or symptoms of an injury.

Standards Evaluate a casualty following the correct sequence of major steps and identify all injuries and/or conditions. Immobilize the casualty if a neck or back injury is suspected.

Training Information Outline Notes:
Seek Medical Aid as soon as possible. Do not stop treatment or leave casualty, if situation allows send another to seek medical aid. Any signs of chem or Bio attack Immediately mask yourself and your casualty. Do not move the casualty if broken neck or back is suspected unless it is to save His/Her life.

1. Check for responsiveness.
Ask in a loud, but calm voice, “Are you okay?” Gently Shake or tap the casualty on the shoulder. Watch for response. If casualty does not respond, got to step 2. If the casualty is conscious, ask where he or she feels different then usual, or where it hurts. Go to step 3.

2. Check for breathing. Breathing is checked using the following methods. Look - For a rise and fall of the chest. Listen- For breathing by placing your ear about 1” above the casualty’s mouth and nose. Feel - For breathing by placing you hand or cheek about 1” above the casualty’s mouth and nose.

If the casualty is not breathing, stop and begin treatment Note: If you do not know how to perform CPR, you should try to locate medical personnel, or another soldier that knows. Do not perform CPR if you do not know how!

3. Check for bleeding. Look for spurts of blood-soaked clothes.
Look for entry and exit wounds. If bleeding is present, stop and evaluation and begin treatment in accordance with the following tasks.>> Arm or leg wound: Put on a field or pressure dressing. Partial or complete amputation: put on a tourniquet. Open head wound: Apply a dressing. Open abdominal wound: Apply A dressing to the wound Open chest wound apply a dressing to a chest wound.

4. Check for shock. A. Check for any of the following signs and/or symptoms.
Sweaty but cool skin (clammy skin). Paleness of the skin Restlessness or nervousness. Thirst. Loss of blood (bleeding). Confusion (Ask simple questions). Faster then normal breathing rate. Blotchy or bluish skin, especially around the mouth Nausea and/or vomiting.

Shock Cont. b. If signs or symptoms of shock are present, stop evaluation and begin treatment. (see STP )

5. Check for fractures. Look for the following signs and/or symptoms of a back or neck injury. Pain or tenderness of the neck or back. Cuts or bruises in the neck or back areas. Inability of a casualty to move (paralysis or numbness) Ask about the ability to move (paralysis) Touch the casualty’s arms and legs and ask if they can feel the stimulus (numbness). Unusual body or limb position.

Fractures cont: immobilize any casualty suspected of having a neck or back injury by doing the following: Tell the casualty not to move. If a back injury is suspected, place padding under the natural arch of the casualty’s back. If a neck injury is suspected, place a roll of cloth under the casualty’s neck and put boots (filled with dirt, sand, etc.) or rocks on both sides of the head.

Fractures Cont: Check the casualty’s arms and legs for open or closed fractures. Check for open fractures. Look for bleeding or bone sticking through the skin. Check for closed fractures. Look for swelling, discoloration, deformity, or unusual body position.

Fractures cont: If a fracture to an arm or leg is suspected, stop the evaluation and begin treatment (Splint, )

6. Check for burns. Look carefully for reddened, blistered, or charred skin. Also check for singed clothes. If burns are found, stop evaluation and begin treatment (first aid for burns, ).

7. Check for head injury. A. Look for the following signs and symptoms.
Unequal pupils. Fluid from the ear (s), Nose, mouth, or injury site. Slurred speech. Confusion. Sleepiness Loss of memory or consciousness. Staggering in walking. Headache. Dizziness. Vomiting. Paralysis. Convulsions or twitches.

Head injury cont. If a head injury is suspected, continue to watch for signs which would require performance of mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, treatment for shock, or control bleeding.

Test Standards You may ask Instructor questions before test.
You must score a 70% or higher to get a GO for this class. All NO GO’s will have an opportunity to ask questions after they receive their grade. Please no talking during test. Good Luck
