4. Telephone Conversation
Wole Soyinka's poem 'Telephone Conversation' explores the feeling of a black man looking for a room to rent in England. This sort of racist question on the part of the landlady, and the decision to refuse to rent to non-whites, became illegal with the passing of the Race Relations Bill. A three-part oral reading will help students follow the conversation as well as appreciate the details and tone of the non-spoken parts of the poem.

7. Widow anecdote
Powell uses the pathetic anecdote of a war widow to generate fear, pity and anger in the British public. Not only is she a vulnerable woman but also a widow who has “lost her husband and both her sons in the war”. This detail suggests that the country owes her a debt of gratitude and that she is isolated in her own home. The language of invasion used to describe “the Negro” (in itself a racist and demeaning term): foe exampl the verbs “taken over”, “abused” and “attacked” heightens her isolation and places the immigrants in a position of unjust power over her. It is ironic that Powell uses the imagery of “excreta pushed through a letterbox” as this is what was happening to many immigrants at the time. Powell is trying to reverse any public sympathy garnered by campaign groups, for example “The Sikh Community” – again presented as one homogenous group who he claims are responsible for “fragmenting” British society. The word fragmentation an irretrievable breakdown of an unspecific “ordinary” “decent” way if life represented by the widow in the anecdote.
