4 The Bigger Picture UK & Wales
Stroke is the UK’s third biggest killer after heart disease and cancer Approx. 152,000 strokes occur in the UK each year Approx. 50,000 people die from stroke each year Each year in Wales 11,000 people have a stroke We estimate that 65,100 people in Wales are living with the effects of stroke

Explain what a stroke is and what they can expect Help with navigating the health and social care system Help with discharge planning Continue to provide support post-discharge Support lifestyle changes to reduce stroke risk   Signposting / referring on to services and opportunities

13 Life After Stroke Grant
For stroke survivors experiencing financial hardship caused by their stroke Eligibility ≤ £1000 in savings Income must not exceed expenditure by >10% Means-test form with social impact statement Service User supplies letter-headed quote Usually up to £400 (straight to vendor) Takes about 4-5 weeks

What we can’t help fund … Private medical treatment Travel outside the UK Labour costs, including removal and structural alterations Nursing home fees other than respite Computer equipment or televisions Debts and rent arrears

15 Research We believe in the power of research to save lives
We aim to make stroke a preventable and treatable disease We aim to improve the quality of life for people affected by stroke We have an annual budget of £3M to fund stroke research

16 Did you know … … we’ve invested £40M over 20 years into stroke research? 1994 – first trial of Early Supported Discharge at Guys and St. Thomas’ 1996 – Nottingham Stroke Unit study showing that treatment on a specialised stroke unit reduces disability and saves lives 1999 – feasibility study for IST-3: thrombolysis brought into 12 UK hospitals for full trials

2003 – 1/10 with TIA will have a stroke within a week; 80% can be prevented with prompt medical treatment. 2005 – development of the ABCD score to identify which TIA patients are at the greatest risk of having a full stroke
