Designing a Solar Cooker
Physics Project Designing a Solar Cooker Group members: Annabelle Lam (16) Winnie Lam (17) Fiona Lam (18) Yvonne Lee (19) Carrie Leung (20)
2
Introduction .. Objectives:
build our own solar cooker and use it to cook sausages / fish balls. Background information: ---make use of the solar energy to cook food. ---to make the solar box collect as much as solar energy. ---keep the temperature inside high by reducing the energy loss to surroundings.
3
Materials and tools .. ---Cardboard box ---Aluminium foil
---Black poster colour for filling the colour of the box ---Plastic sheets ---Glue/Sticky tape ---Cutter ---Scissors ---Thick cardboard ---Can
4
Diagrams .. Side view: 4 pieces of aluminium foil (with dull surface)
Top view: Cardboard (black in colour) 2 pieces of plastic sheet A piece of aluminium foil for reflection
5
Outside of the cooker : Reasons for Choosing the Above Materials
In Our Design Outside of the cooker : ---Black in colour →good absorber of radiation and heat → more heat can be absorbed ---Transparent plastic sheets → allow heat to penetrate → prevent heat from escaping ---Most are aluminium foil → conductor → conduct as much heat ---Cardboard (wrapped by aluminium foil) → support the set-up ---HOUSE in shape → special design for trapping heat inside
6
Inner part of the cooker:
Continue .. Inner part of the cooker: Wrapped by aluminium foil (silver and shiny surface) ---reflect heat in the cooker → prevent heat from escaping Metal can to place the food ---Trap more heat to cook the food ---Conductor → conduct as much heat to the food Bottom part of the cooker: Aluminium foil Inner surface: shiny and silver → ensure the circulation of heat → locking heat inside Outer surface: painted black → good absorber of radiation and heat → more heat can be absorbed
