Georgia O’keeffe

Georgia O’Keeffe ( ) Among the women painters in the U.S., one of the best known and most outstanding is Georgia O'Keeffe.

Georgia O’Keeffe ( ) Georgia was born in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. She spent her childhood on a large farm and never lost her love for nature and land. She decided to become an artist at the young age of 10.

Georgia O’Keeffe ( ) Although Georgia had a passion for art, it wasn't easy for a woman to become an artist in the early 1900s. This didn't stop her. After high school, she attended the Art Institute of Chicago and then the Art Students League in New York.  Georgia's early art career was difficult. She bounced around from job to job. Sometimes she taught art, and at other times she worked as a commercial artist.

Georgia O’Keeffe ( ) As Georgia explored art, she began to develop her own unique style. She began to express her emotions and feelings in her art. Georgia made several charcoal sketches that were some of her first expressions of her new style.  Num. 13 Special

Georgia O’Keeffe ( ) In 1925, her first large-scale flower painting was exhibited in New York City. Petunia marked the beginning of a period of exploration on the flower theme that would continue throughout her career. Petunia

Georgia O’Keeffe ( ) By magnifying her subject, she emphasized shape and color and brought attention to the tiny details within the flower.  She made about 200 flower paintings. Oriental Poppies An Orchid Red Canna

Georgia O’Keeffe ( ) "Nobody sees a flower, really, it is so small. We have no time - and to see takes time like to have a friend takes time.” -Georgia O’Keeffe

Georgia O’Keeffe ( ) In the 1930s, Georgia took some trips to New Mexico. She loved it so much that she eventually moved there. She painted lots of paintings of the mountains, the desert, and the adobe houses.

Georgia O’Keeffe ( ) She especially loved to paint pictures of animal skulls. Sometimes she even painted desert landscapes and skulls on the same canvases. She continued to paint until she lost her eyesight. In 1986 she died at her home in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Georgia O’Keeffe ( ) While her work varied between portraits, abstractions and landscapes, Georgia's work is still most identified by her iconic flower paintings. In 2014 the Georgia O'Keefe Museum sold a floral painting for 44 million dollars at an auction setting the record for artwork sold by a female artist. The piece, titled Jimson Weed/White Flower No.1 was painted in 1932 and is an iconic representation of a large-scale flower.
