The Process used to answer questions and solve problems.
Scientific Method The Process used to answer questions and solve problems.
2
Problem / Question State the problem or question.
Like….what kind of bug spray kills the most ants?
3
Research Gather information in the form of research. (articles, magazines, journals, internet, etc)
4
Hypothesis A hypothesis is a tentative answer to your question or problem(should be research based) Copyright © 2008 Pearson Education, Inc., publishing as Pearson Benjamin Cummings
5
Experiment Experiment- tests your hypothesis
Independent variable-. What you are testing. Dependent variable- What you measure Constants- Things that you keep the same to keep the experiment fair Control Group – The group not receiving the experimental treatment. Experimental Group – The group receiving the experimental treatment.
6
Data Recorded observations and measurements from the experiment (usually graphs and tables.) Types of Data: Quantitative and Qualitative Quantitative: Usually have a numeric value. Qualitative: Gathered with your senses. i.e. color, smell, description
7
Remembering Variables
DRY MIX D-Dependent variable R- Responding variable Y- (goes on) Y-axis M-Manipulated variable I-Independent variable X-(goes on) X-axis
8
Analyze Analyze the data (figure out what it means)
9
Conclusions Draw conclusions about your hypotheses from the data.
10
Repeat Repeat the experiment to make sure the results are reliable.
Theory- believed to be true but can change as we learn more (evolution) Law – unchanging (gravity) Report your results by sharing with others and publishing.
11
