3 During the Cold War, Korea was divided into communist North Korea and non-communist South Korea.

4 The Korean War began in 1950 when North Korea invaded South Korea in an attempt to reunite Korea under communism.

5 The United Nations sent forces to Korea to fight back against North Korea and prevent its takeover.

6 Fighting during the Korean War ended in 1953 when an armistice was signed and Korea remained a divided nation.
