Scientific Method Observations Purpose Hypothesis Experiment Data
Results Conclusion Retest
2
Information about the problem.
Observations Information about the problem.
3
The purpose is a question based upon observations.
4
A suggested solution to the problem.
Hypothesis A suggested solution to the problem. If…Then…
5
A procedure to test the hypothesis.
Experiment A procedure to test the hypothesis. Must be specific. List materials.
6
Experiment con’t Control- used for comparison, kept under normal conditions. Independent Variable- factor that is manipulated by experimenter Dependent Variable- factor being measured
7
Data A table or chart for gathering info.
Qualitative (red, fast) or Quantitative (15 min., 43 mm.)
8
Results, Analysis Totals, Analyses, or Observations
Can be expressed in a graph.
9
Conclusion (to the hypothesis)
How does your data relate to the hypothesis does it confirm or deny it?
10
In order to verify the results, experiments must be retested.

Sample Lab Report Date________ Title of Activity 1 Lab Partner(s)___________ Purpose: Brief statement of why this is being done. What are you trying to do? Hypothesis: How do you think the change in the independent variable will affect the dependent variable? Materials: What do you need to complete the activity? Can be in list format.
16
Lab Report Con’t Procedure: Steps of procedure
Note any changes between what you planned to do and what you actually did! Calculations Amount of materials used Temperature, pH, mass, etc. Be specific. State the control, independent variable, and dependent variable. Anyone reading the notebook should be able to repeat the activity.
17
Lab Report Con’t Data: Record data in labeled charts/tables. Also, record observations. (Quantitative or Qualitative) Results: (Include any graphs here) Conclusion: Analysis of data. Does the data support the hypothesis? Explain. Include any problems, sources of error and changes in procedure. Date: ____________ Signature: ______________
