1 Hebron CHURCH OF CHRIST at November 8, 2009 Don’t Forget:
Pew 5:45 Elders/Deacons meeting tonight

2 Holy and Reverend is His Name Psalm 111:9
God Demands Respect Man Demonstrates Respect

3 God Demands Respect Psalm 111:9 He sent redemption unto his people: he hath commanded his covenant for ever: holy and reverend is his name.

4 1 Holy “holy”—sacred, separated, from the idea of ceremonial cleansing
31 times— “the Holy One of Israel” Leviticus—“Be ye holy, for I am holy”

5 2 Reverend “reverend”—terrible, to frighten (Hosea 10:3)
Genesis 3:10 And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. Genesis 18:15 Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh Genesis 19:30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar

6 Consider those who did not respect God:
Korah (Numbers 16)—swallowed by the earth Uzzah (II Samuel 6)—dropped dead Nadab and Abihu (Leviticus 10)—consumed by fire from heaven

7 Man Demonstrates Respect 1 By our worship
John 4: But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

8 Man Demonstrates Respect 1 By our worship
We must recognize: The proper object of worship The Father—the object (John 4:23-24) The Son—the way (John 14:6) The Holy Spirit—the teacher (John 16:13) The proper method for worship (Col.3:17)

9 Man Demonstrates Respect 2 By our speech
Exodus 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. The Jews of OT times would not use the name of God (Jehovah—Exodus 6:3) Instead, they used “Adonoy” (Lord)

10 Man Demonstrates Respect 2 By our speech
Titus 2:7-8 In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you. Matthew 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

11 Man Demonstrates Respect 2 By our speech
Back when God was a name I used in vain to get a point across when I got ticked off Lord I’m learning so much more than back when I knew it all —Back when I knew it all Montgomery Gentry

12 Man Demonstrates Respect 3 By our life
Leviticus 20:26 And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the Lord am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine I Peter 1: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

13 Man Demonstrates Respect 3 By our life
This principle reveals two things about holiness: God demands holiness God dictates what holiness is

14 God’s nature demands our respect…
…are we demonstrating respect toward Him?

15 Consider During the Lord’s Supper:
Matthew 26: And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
