Hazard Control Hierarchy
ELIMINATION The elimination of a hazard should always be given first consideration. Should this not be possible then step two is to substitute.
5
Hierarchy of Controls SUBSTITUTION
If the hazard identified is potentially hazardous to people in the workplace, every attempt should be made to substitute to a less harmful alternative.
6
Hierarchy of Controls ENGINEERING CONTROLS
This is to suppress or reduce the level of potential hazard, this could be by reducing the level of contaminant, altering environmental conditions or the use of mechanical aids.
7
Hierarchy of Controls ISOLATION
This could be due to the use of chemicals that need this type of storage, or a person welding. This is also part of engineering controls.
8
Hierarchy of Controls ADMINISTRATION
This is where information on processes, instruction, training, procedures, policies, budgets available or management support.
9
Hierarchy of Controls PERSONAL PROTECTION CLOTHING AND EQUIPMENT
This is the final stage when all of the above measures have been adopted first, remembering the term practicable.
