Reported piracy incidents Gulf of Aden & Indian Ocean 15 September 2011
Pirates hijacked the MT FAIRCHEM BOGEY, a Marshall Island flagged and Indian owned tanker, with a crew of 21 Indians on 20 August 2011. Hijacked while it was anchored within the port of Salalah, Oman. Hijacking of the MT Fairchem Bogey from the anchorage at Salalah (within Oman's Territorial Waters) confirms the increased capacity of the pirates.

Reported piracy incidents Gulf of Aden & Indian Ocean 15 September 2011
Current Military Update The South West Monsoon has weakened in the Gulf of Aden and the area is now conducive for small boat operations. More attacks are likely in areas of calmer weather like closer to the straits of Bab-el-Mandeb and into the Red Sea. Monsoon conditions have also weakened over the eastern Indian Ocean and calmer weather is predicted. Areas of concern remain the Southern Red Sea, Bab-el-Mandeb, Gulf of Aden and the Somalia Basin.

Significant Vessel Release
MT POLAR, Greek owned and Panama flagged tanker, was hijacked on 30 October 2010 with a crew of 23. Released on 26 Aug after payment of ransom. Cargo (marine fuel oil) used to power other vessels. Ran the most mother ship operations; and broke the record for furthest movement out to the northeast and southeast. Up to 50 pirates on board at one time, as well as 10 skiffs; served as a forward operating base and had mid-level leadership on board. NCIS (US Naval Criminal Investigation Service) conducted the Crime Scene Investigation (including debriefing of crew members) in Salalah, Oman (the port of refuge), on Aug. 2011

SUPPORT TO SHIPOWNERS AND SEAFARERS
New Chapter on Law Enforcement: Prosecution of Pirates - Assisting Law Enforcement Authorities 12.7: INTERPOL has a secure website to provide support to ship operators who have had their vessels hijacked by pirates. INTERPOL’s Maritime Piracy Task Force can assist in taking the appropriate steps to preserve the integrity of the evidence left behind at the crime scene. 12.8: INTERPOL may be consulted to discuss the recommended best practices and protocols for the preservation of evidence or other physical clues that could be useful to law enforcement agents pursuing an investigation of the incident.

INTERNATIONAL + REGIONAL SUPPORT
FOR INTERPOL ACTION KEY UN SECURITY COUNCIL RESOLUTIONS Resolution 1950-Welcomed the ongoing work of IMO, INTERPOL and industry groups to develop guidance to seafarers on preservation of crime scenes following acts of piracy, and urged all States, in cooperation with INTERPOL and Europol, to further investigate international criminal networks involved in piracy off the coast of Somalia, including those responsible for illicit financing and facilitation. Resolution 1976-Urged States and international organizations to share evidence and information for anti-piracy law enforcement purposes with a view to ensuring effective prosecution of suspected, and imprisonment of convicted, pirates.
