1 Students will be able to explain the roles
Chapter 6: 3 A 8.5.09 d Students will be able to explain the roles played by significant individuals during the American Revolution.

2 “The War Moves West and South”
The Western Frontier– The British allied with Native Americans and raided American settlements in southwest NY and northern Pennsylvania. A Virginia militia- leader, George Rogers Clark, set out to end Native American raids on American settle- ments. His victory at Vincennes (today’s Indiana) strengthened the American position in the west.

3 The British change their strategy: The
Carolina Campaign 1778 The British plan consists of attacking the Southern colonies using the British navy to blockade southern ports and use the Tory/ Loyalist support in the South to defeat Patriot forces. May 1780– General Henry Clinton, leader of British forces in America after Gen. Howe resigned, attacked and defeated Patriot forces in Charlestown, S.C.

4 This was the worst American defeat of the
war. After the victory in Charlestown Gen. Clinton went back to NY. He left British General Charles Cornwallis in command of British forces in the South. August 1780– The Battle of Camden, S.C.= At this battle the hero of Saratoga, Gen. Horatio Gates, is defeated by British Gen. Cornwallis. Gates ends up fleeing the battlefield and outrunning his army. He didn’t stop (except to eat and sleep) until

5 he reached Hillsboro, NC. This battle
proved to be near fatal to southern Patriots. Initially, the Carolina campaign seemed to be successful…

6 Guerrilla Warfare= Hit and Run Strikes…
A major flaw of the Carolina Campaign was the British overestimation of Tory/ Loyalist support in the South. The British were met, not by numerous Tory supporters, but by Patriot militia men such as Francis Marion of S.C. Nicknamed the “Swamp Fox” Marion would lead surprise hit and run raids from behind trees, rocks, and barns before escaping into the South Carolina swamps.

7 This “guerrilla warfare” kept British Gen.
Cornwallis from being able to advance through the Carolinas toward NY.
