critic (n) Definition: one who expresses a reasoned opinion on any matter, especially involving a judgment of its value, truth, righteousness, beauty, or technique Blind Film Critic Sentence: The blind film critic analyzed characterization and sound when he gave a critique of the movie, Suicide Squad.

hypocrisy (noun) Definition: the behavior of people who do things that they tell other people not to do : behavior that does not agree with what someone claims to believe or feel Sentence: In The Outsiders, some of the Socs display hypocrisy when they tell their friends they won’t speak to the Greasers, and then they go to the drive-in and talk to Ponyboy and Johnny.

criticize (v) Sentence:
The Socs criticize the Greasers, and the Greasers criticize the Socs, but as Cherry Valence says in chapter 2, “Things are rough all over.” Definition: to express disapproval of (someone or something) : to talk about the problems or faults of (someone or something); to make judgments about something

critique (n/v) Definition: a careful judgment in which you give your opinion about the good and bad parts of something (such as a piece of writing or a work of art) Grease Lightening Sentence: Watch a clip from the movie Grease and critique the setting, characterization, and acting/singing performance.

conform (v) Definition: to be similar to or the same as something : to obey or agree with something : to do what other people do : to behave in a way that is accepted by most people Intro to Grease Sentence: In Grease and The Outsiders, the Greaser characters often don’t conform to the standard dress code and behavior of the societies they live in.

transform (v) Definition: to change (something) completely and usually in a good way Sentence: The mark of a round and dynamic character, such as Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally is that they transform from the beginning of a novel to the end.

deform (v) Definition: to change something so that it no longer has its normal or original shape Sentence: The Socs tried to beat up Ponyboy and deform his face; however, Ponyboy only received a small cut on his cheek.

chloroform (n) Definition: a colorless, sweet-smelling poisonous liquid; used in the past as an anesthesia for surgical procedures Sentence: Do you think that in the next rumble, the Greasers will seek revenge for Ponyboy’s attack by making the Socs sniff chloroform?

associate (v) Sentence: I often associate the word “greaser” with The Outsiders, black leather jackets, slicked-back hair, and Chuck Taylor sneakers. Definition: to think of one person or thing when you think of another person or thing : to be together with another person or group as friends, partners, etc.

classify (v) Definition:
to arrange (people or things) into groups based on ways that they are alike : to consider (someone or something) as belonging to a particular group Sentence: Would you classify the following staff as Greaser or Soc and why? -Mrs. Cojocar -Mrs. Barney -Mr. Mags -Mr. McManus -Ms. Paris -Mr. Gorbatuk -Mrs. Kurzius -Mrs. Joy

Literary Device: cliche (n)
Sentence: When S.E. Hinton wrote The Outsiders, her novel ended the clichés of young adult writing by providing a fresh, realistic perspective of teenage lives. Definition: a phrase or expression that has been used so often that it is no longer original or interesting : something that is so commonly used in books, stories, etc., that it is no longer effective

Grammar Focus: pronouns
Definition: -any word that replaces nouns or other pronouns -The antecedent is the word the pronoun replaces. Example: The Greasers (antecedent) fixed their (pronoun) hair in the bathroom mirror. vague pronoun: when a pronoun is used but the antecedent is unclear Example: When Ponyboy handed Johnny the popcorn, he sneezed. Who sneezed—Pony or Johnny?
