1 Con Electronic Voting Preston Pope, Zach White, Ankit Shrivastava, Max Alexander

2 What is e-voting? Election system that allows a voter to record his or her secure and secret ballot electronically Examples: direct recording electronic (DRE) touch screens or optical scanners Information is stored digitally through mediums such as smart cards or disks

3 The Current System 1. Punch card system 2. Chad card system
3. Marksense (scantron) card

4 How Do DRE Machines Work?
Vote on electronic machines without physical ballots Machine stores the information digitally The results are tabulated and revealed

5 Over Reliance on Software
"For over a decade, all direct recording electronic machines have been required to contain redundant storage, but this redundant storage is not an independent record of the votes, because it is created by the same software that created the original record. As a result, [the multiple files] are of limited use...to check the correctness of the software." -- Doug Jones, Ph.D. Professor of Computer Science, University of Iowa

6 Prevention is Not Enough
Over 120 known threats to electronic voting systems (Brennan Center for Justice) Even if not connected to the Internet, the software can be corrupted by the manufacturer or anyone who has access to the machine.

7 Problems in the Past Election
Complaints about electronic voting machines were 5 times more prevalent than complaints about hand ballots Complaints consisted of confusing voting screens, malfunctions resulting in votes cast for the wrong candidates, and inaccessibility for handicapped voters . - The United States Election Assistance Commission

8 Inability to Audit The anonymity of the voting process makes it very difficult to go back and test the validity of the information passed from the machine. This is the difference between electronic voting and secure electronic commerce.

9 Societal Implications
Unjust to sacrifice accuracy for speed Current system provides more accountability, and has built in measures to test the results. Despite occasional recounts, current system can find and solve the problem whereas e-voting could be manipulated.

10 Conclusion E-voting has too many potential problems and is simply too dangerous. Could have large negative repercussions . For a more sustainable democracy, vote against e-voting.
