1 Thursday, September 28, 2017 Warm-Up: Explain some characteristics of liquids. What makes them a liquid? Learning Target: I can investigate and determine different properties liquids have in a specific mixture. Success Criteria: I will be successful using various properties to identify liquids. Plan for Today 1. Vocabulary 2. Physical & Chemical Properties 3. Liquid Investigation 4. Analysis Questions/Worksheet

2 What are the liquids in the mixture?
CHALLENGE Question: What are the liquids in the mixture?

3 Vocabulary Physical Properties: a characteristic of a substance or material; color, density, flexibility Chemical Properties: a specific result of a test with a chemical reaction; pH, color change, salt production Miscible: two or more substances that can be mixed together in any ratio to form a single phase without separation; mixes = miscible, not mixes = not miscible

4 Tests/data collection being done:
appearance miscible in water miscible in ethanol (alcohol) contains water corrosive toxic flammable Liquid A or B flammable? (Demo and fill in 6.1.)

5 ONLY ONE CAP OFF A BOTTLE AT ONE TIME and DROP THROUGH THE AIR !
PROCEDURE and DATA: ONLY ONE CAP OFF A BOTTLE AT ONE TIME and DROP THROUGH THE AIR ! Materials: Procedure: Read A-22 to 24. Data: WS 6.1 (done in class) *Also update WS 5.1 with new data! clear yellow

6 vials ethanol vials ethanol BLUE test strip

7 ANALYSIS: A-24 Qs 1, 2 + 3 TAN test strip potassium… dropper bottle
add TAN test strip potassium… dropper bottle ANALYSIS: A-24 Qs 1, 2 + 3

8 ANALYZE RESULTS BELOW TO IDENTIFY LIQUID A and LIQUID B

9 Finish your Analysis Questions. WORK ON YOUR ATOM TIMELINE!!!
DONE? Awesome! Please CLEAN-UP! Finish your Analysis Questions. Still have more time? WORK ON YOUR ATOM TIMELINE!!!

10 ANALYSIS: A 24 Q1 Q2 Q3 Table 2 says Liquid A is mineral oil because not corrosive, is flammable - but is NOT toxic. Table 2 says Liquid B is iron nitrate because it is toxic but not flammable, it IS corrosive. Table 2 says Liquid B is more hazardous because it is toxic and corrosive (Liquid A is not – only flammable). Update WS 5.1 with Hazards" Yes" or "No"

11 What are the liquids in the mixture?
ANSWER CHALLENGE Question: What are the liquids in the mixture? The mixture's liquids are: A = mineral oil B = iron nitrate HOMEWORK: 1. Check for MISSING assignments (ASAP)!

12 Explain how you used physical and chemical properties today.
REFLECTION Explain how you used physical and chemical properties today. HOMEWORK: 1. Check for MISSING assignments (ASAP)!
