1 Matter Review (key on last slide)

2 Pure Substances vs. Mixtures
Decide if each substance is PURE or a MIXTURE. Then determine if each should be classified as ELEMENT, COMPOUND, HOMOGENEOUS, or HETEROGENEOUS.

3 Aluminum (Al)

4 Sucrose (C12H22O11) Table sugar

5 Brown Sugar

6 Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4 aq) This woman appeared on 20/20 to share her story of how she was doused with sulfuric acid.

7 Neosporin

8 ICE, ICE BABY ! (H2O)

9 Sand

10 Calcium Carbonate (CaCO3) (used in antacids and calcium supplements; also found in many marine animal shells)

11 Potassium Permanganate (KMnO4) (Can be used as a disinfectant or water treatment; also used in movies to "age" props – ex: this was used in the movie “300” to age weapons)

12 Shampoo

13 Coffee

14 Glycerol (C3H8O3)– used in the food, cosmetics, & pharmaceutical industries

15 Titanium (Ti)– when heated, titanium can change into many colors

16 Silver (Ag)

17 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2 aq)

18 How can a heterogeneous mixture be distinguished from a homogeneous mixture?
HE mixture can be separated into its components and HO mixtures can’t. HE mixtures are uniform throughout and are called “solutions”. HE mixtures will are typically alloy metals. HE mixture components are visible under a microscope but HO components are not

19 Which IS a method that could be used to separate parts of a homogeneous mixture/solution?
A. Magnetic attraction B. Strainer/collander C. Centrifuge D. Evaporation/heating

20 Which type of mixture will a filter separate?
Homogeneous Heterogeneous

21 Which of these is/are pure substance/s?
A. Toothpaste, Platinum, Chromium B. Platinum, Chromium C. Mouthwash, Platinum D. Toothpaste, Chromium

22 Which of these is/are a Pure Substance?
A. Element B. Compound C. Mixture D. Element & Compound E. Element, Compound, Mixture

23 Which results in a physical change?
A. Solidifying water B. A rusting bicycle C. Cracking a glow stick D. Baking bread E. Putting magnesium ribbon into a flame

24 In which state/s is volume definite?
A. Solid B. Liquid C. Gas D. Solid & Liquid E. Liquid & Gas

25 In which state of matter do particles carry the most energy?
A. Bose-Einstein B. Solid C. Liquid D. Gas E. Plasma

26 Which is a chemical property?
A. Toxicity B. Density C. Melting Point D. Malleability E. Luster

27 Which is NOT an indication that a chemical change has occurred?
When clear solutions are combined, a substance forms that appears cloudy and settles to the bottom. A liquid in a beaker on a hot plate is bubbling, later leaving the beaker empty. A shiny piece of metal develops a brownish layer over time. Two clear solutions combined result in a bright red solution. Magnesium metal is heated, emits bright white light, and leaves a powdery white residue.
