1. I’m thinking of a number…
I think of a number, add 4, divide by 3, then multiply by 5. The final answer is 25. What is my number?
2
Let x be my number. 5[(x + 4) ÷ 3] = 25 (x + 4) ÷3 = 5 x + 4 = 15 x = 11 My number is x = 11.

2. Three friends have 200 cards between them.
Joe has 36 more cards than Chris. Katy has twice as many cards as Chris. How many cards does each friend have?
4
Let the number of cards which Chris has be x.
Joe has x + 36 cards. Katy has 2x cards.
5
The total number of cards
between them is: Chris+Joe+Katy = 200 x + (x+ 36) + 2x = 200 4x + 36 = 200 4x = 164 x = 41

So, Chris has… 41 cards Joe has… 77 cards Katy has… 82 cards.
