1 Teacher Slide This week students and teachers will begin to build partnerships and create a culture where students will be successful in school. They will seek to answer the question “Why Seminar?” They will examine sections of the student handbook. Be prepared with more partnership building activities just incase lessons don’t take the entire 45 minutes. If you need some ideas see you Partner Teacher or Grade Level Seminar Lead for suggestions. But Please do so before seminar. Slides 2 – 10 September 6 Give each student a index card at the door Make copies of YOUR syllabi Step in/Step out – get to know each other (you can use the statements given or create your own) – to help create a culture of academic excellence and effective partnership – I recommend that teachers participate as well. Syllabi & Planner 11 – 18 September 7 Hall passes – remind students that we have a closed campus – this includes Lincoln Park!!! (Lincoln Park is not part of campus). Please use the “Seminar Expectations” slide to introduce or remind students of common practices during seminar.

Partnership Building Planners Exit Slip -Homework - time permitting Homework: Exit Ticket: - Turn in your notecard Do Now: Private Reasoning Time (PRT) Think about the following question and write your response on an index card. Include your name and the date on the top right corner. Questions: What is one thing that is important for your seminar teacher to know about you? Why? What are your hopes for this year? What are your fears for this year?

4 Purpose of Seminar Seminar students will:
Develop life skills including Time management Goal setting Following through on commitments Interpersonal skills Transcript development. Work to create an academic environment (study tables) Improve their academic work Post high school preparedness Gain necessary skills for the rigors of collegiate work, 9th grade will focus on transition to High School and preparing for Student Led Conferences 10th grade will focus on successful professional habits and Student Led Conferences 11th grade will focus on Career & College readiness, scholarship application & Student Led Conferences 12th grade will focus on graduation, Career & College applications and exit interviews

Step in/Step out For each statement, take a step in if the statement is true for you You will not be commenting on it – simply acknowledging that the statement is true for you Teacher will then tell you to step back out

I like the outdoors. I like ice cream. I am close to my family. I have at least 2 siblings. I live in a single parent home. I am involved in school sports. I am involved in school clubs. I like to read. I like to write. Math is my favorite subject. Science is my favorite subject. I like to travel. I am excited for this school year. I have been impacted by violence. I have at least 1 family member in prison. I am afraid of my future. I have a plan for my future. My plan includes post high school education. I know at least 3 colleges I want to apply to. I have a job currently. I am afraid by GPA is not good enough. I believe in working hard to achieve my dreams. I know I have a bright future ahead of me.

Planners/Syllabi Give each student his/her planner Give each student a copy of the syllabus Sign sheet stating that students have received both A good model for planner use page 2 (green)

8 Planners & Syllabi Planners will be used
To help students keep track of their homework assignments. To help students backwards plan summative assignments. Seminar teachers will check their planners as part of formative assessments in seminar. Syllabus Find one item in the Syllabus that is new to you What is the academic eligibility mean? What does it mean to you?

9 Planners Put your NAME and SEMINAR teacher’s name inside the front cover Copy the following important dates: October: FAFSA & WASFA opens (SR) 13 – Homecoming Game 14 – Homecoming Dance 11 – PSAT/SAT (no Seminar) 21 – Scholar Saturday 26 – No Seminar 27 – No School for Students (Data Day) 30 – FAFSA Due (SR) September: 15 – Picture Day 21 – Back to School Night 21 – Pre-FAFSA Night (SR)

Last day for schedule changes -15th Career Center open for Personal Statement help starting Sept. 12th - Tues & Thurs 3:15-4:30 Do Now: Private Reasoning Time (PRT) Think about the following question and write your response on a notecard. Include your name and the date on the top right corner of the notecard. Question: Draw what it means to be a “Lincoln Scholar.”

Read the following sections in the student planner: Attendance (page 4) LHS progressive Behavior Support Plan (page 6) Fighting (page 7) Use the Connect, Extend, Challenge protocol: Connect – what can you connect with personally? What connections can you make to prior knowledge? Extend – where in the text were your thoughts pushed to the next level? Challenge: What questions do you still have after reading and thinking about the text?

15 With an Elbow Partner… Discuss with your elbow partner:
What is important about attendance and the Behavior support plan? How do you think you will benefit from the three policies? Discuss and share out with whole class

Create a skit, tableau, poster, or something else to present the themes in your section

19 Seminar Expectations Silent 15: the first 15 minutes of every seminar session is silent 15. During this time take out your planner – update assignments. Take out your work for the day get started. Seminar follows the 15/10 rule, just like every LHS class. This week: Planner: All planners are expected to be on your desk and up-to-date with HW for each class. Hallpasses: need to be PREARRANGED with the teacher you are going to visit. Come Prepared: bring all your materials to seminar. This is not the time to visit your locker – supplies, textbooks, and notebooks all need to come with you to class. If you finish classwork, you should have reading materials
