Stories help us find meaning in life events and are an important mechanism for transferring information and culture from one generation to the next (Lambert et al., 2007). Activity # 1 Think about a moment in your life in relation to Chico State? Maybe your first day on campus, your first day of class, your first publication, getting the tenure and promotion letter, make belief (just make up a story), etc. You have a story to tell around that moment? Reflect on that moment for 2-3 minutes and then find a partner to share the story!

Tips on Script Writing Informal/conversation style of writing script
Show vs. Tell Break story into small sections When you record the script, remember: To talk slower than your normal pace Uses pauses to emphasize aspects of the story Sometimes silence can speak more than words can

Explicit vs Implicit Consider using explicit images when the specifics of the photo (subject, time, place…) are necessary to establish context Consider using implicit images when emotion or insight are being established Consider using a photo instead of stating the obvious in your script.

1. Point of View What is the main point of the story and what is the perspective of the author? 2. A Dramatic Question A key question that keeps the viewer’s attention and will be answered by the end of the story. 3. Emotional Content Serious issues that come alive in a personal and powerful way and connects the story to the audience. 4. The Gift of Your Voice A way to personalize the story to help the audience understand the context. 5. The Power of the Soundtrack Music or other sounds that support and embellish the storyline. 6. Economy Using just enough content to tell the story without overloading the viewer. 7. Pacing The rhythm of the story and how slowly or quickly it progresses.
