Radical Equations A radical equation is when there is a variable under the radical. You must check your answers because there may be extraneous solutions (solutions that do not work in the original problem) You must state any extraneous solutions.

Ex 1 Isolate the radical; if there is more than one, isolate one at a time. Take the radical to the appropriate power. Solve for the variable. Check your solutions, then state the solution and any extraneous solutions.

Radical Inequalities If the index is even, identify the values of the variable for which the radicand is nonnegative. (you cannot have a negative # underneath the radical with an even index) Solve the inequality algebraically Test values to check your solution
