1 Predicting Products Start by identifying the type of reaction.
Use the general formula and label the parts of the equation Predict the products using the general equation.

2 O2 (g) + H2(g)  Type I: Synthesis
To recognize: 2 pure elements (though may be diatomic) O2 (g) H2(g)  To predict: Use SOX to write formula of one product. Remember that the cation comes first!

3 Type II: Decomposition
To recognize: One compound as a reactant H2O (l) → To predict, break apart into elements (be sure to check for diatomics: H, N, O, F, Cl, Br, I)

4 C3H8 (g) + O2(g)  Type III: Combustion
To recognize: Start with a Hydrocarbon and Oxygen gas (Diatomic!) C3H8 (g) O2(g)  To predict: Always remember that CO2 and H2O are the products!

5 Remember 2 or more simple products
Type of reaction? CaO (s) 

6 Look at reactants Type?? C6H6 (l) O2(g)

7 Remember one product! What type? Al(s) Cl2(g) 

8 Type IV: Single Replacement
To recognize: 1 single element, and compound Zn (s) HCl (aq)  To predict, check to see if reaction happens (activity series). If the reaction will happen then use SOX to recombine into a new compound. The other element will be by itself (check for diatomic)

9 Type? What Happens??? Cu(s) + FeSO4(aq) 

10 Type V: Double Replacement
To recognize: 2 compounds are reacting AgNO3 (aq) + CaCl2(aq) → To predict: Ions switch places and use SOX to form new compounds. Check solubility chart for states of matter. (outies then innies, cations always comes first)

11 H2SO4 (aq) + KOH (aq)  Type VI: Acid-Base
To recognize: Acids start with H, Bases end with OH (though acid does NOT need to be the first reactant listed) H2SO4 (aq) KOH (aq)  To predict: Just like a Double Displacement, the ions will swap partners. As a result, H2O is always produced, along with another ionic compound (so use your SOX), which is called a salt.

12 Type???? Outie /Innie H3PO4(aq) Ca(OH)2 (aq)

13 Type, Predict, and Balance
C4H10(g) O2(g)  Mg (s) H3PO4(aq)  Pb(NO3)2 (aq) + NaCl(aq)  SrCl2 (s) 
