4 Motivations for the Race to Space
USSR wanted to show communist superiority US wanted to beat Soviets One of many ways the US and USSR competed without going to war. Both countries knew whoever “won” would receive an acknowledgement of superiority as well as a country with extremely boosted morale Provided new ways of espionage

5 What it meant to the common people
People on both sides rooted for their countries The moment when US landed on moon was viewed by millions of people around the world US landing of a man on the moon thrilled the Americans and devastated the Russians

6 Satellites First milestone in Space Race
Epic battle to finish first between the Soviet’s Sputnik (top right) and US Vanguard (lower right) Sputnik won, winning the Soviets the first milestone in the Space Race

7 Sputnik Name means “traveler” in Russian
Sputnik 1 was first satellite launched into space October 4th, 1957 Sputnik 2 carried first living creature (Laika the dog) into orbit (first space casualty) Ultimately panicked the US and began the Space Race Competition

8 NASA 1958: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is formed Created in response to Sputnik’s successful launch Headed the Apollo Program, leading to US being the first to land a man on the moon

9 Moon Landing July 20th, 1969: US lands first men on moon: “Buzz” Aldrin, Neil Armstrong, and Micheal Collins Armstrong is the first man to walk on the moon (“That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”) followed by Aldrin Huge milestone for US to win in Cold War

10 Implications of Moon Landing
Scientists and government leaders in both countries were under intense pressure to meet tough deadlines Soviet and US leaders knew that being the first country to land on the moon would be an extremely important media event The world watched each country’s progress with great interest By reaching the moon first, the US “won” the space race
