4. What is a sentence? A sentence is “a complete unit of thought.”
Normally, a sentence expresses relationship, conveys a a command, voices a question, or describes someone or something
Begins with a capital letter and ends with a period, question mark, or exclamation mark

5. Subject and Verb
Basic parts of a sentence are the subject and the verb
Subject is usually a noun – a word (or phrase) that names a person, place, thing
Verb (or predicate) usually follows subject and identifies action or state of being

7. Pronouns Pronouns take the place of nouns in a sentence
Molly danced on the roof of the barn during the thunderstorm.

8. Objects Nouns can also function as objects in sentences
Instead of performing the action, objects receive the action and usually follow the verb
The girls hurled stones.
The professor swigged coffee.
Gus dropped the iPad.

When I finally found my brother, I kissed him.

Remember:
Subject names what the sentence is about
Verb tells what the subject does or is
Object receives the action of the verb
There are many other sentence structures, but this pattern can be found in even the longest and most complicated structures

13. Direct Object vs. Indirect Object
Direct object will follow verb (immediate receiver)
Indirect object: receive benefits of an action
When somebody does something for someone, or something the person or thing it is done for
Tom gave me the book.
Melissa bought Tim some chocolate.

14. Indirect objects answer questions
Indirect objects answer the questions 'to whom', 'to what', 'for whom' or 'for what'.
Susan offered Fred some good advice. - To whom was advice (direct object in a sentence) offered? -> Fred (indirect object)
The teacher teaches the students science in the morning. For whom is science (direct object in a sentence) taught? -> the students (indirect object)

15. Nouns as indirect objects
Indirect objects can be nouns (things, objects, people, etc.).
Generally, however, indirect objects are usually people or groups of people. This is because indirect objects (people) receive the benefit of some action.
I read Peter the report. - 'Peter' is the indirect object and 'the report' (what I read) is the direct object. Mary showed Alice her house. - 'Alice' is the indirect object and 'the house' (what she showed) is the direct object.

16. Pronouns as Indirect Objects
Pronouns can be used as indirect objects.
It's important to note that pronouns used as indirect objects must take the object pronoun form.
What are the object pronouns?
Greg told me the story. - 'Me' is the indirect object and 'the story' (what Greg told) is the direct object.
The boss lent them the start-up investment. - 'Them' is the indirect object and 'the start-up investment' (what the boss lent) is the direct object.

17. If the indirect object comes second, a preposition must be used
If the indirect object comes first in a sentence, there is no preposition
They gave Harold a new car.
Mrs. Jones offered the girls a cake.
My grandma always wishes me good luck.

They gave a new car to Harold.
Mrs. Jones offered a cake to the girls.

18. Rewrite the sentences correctly.
