How do composite sticks improve the speed of your shot?
7/2/2018
4
How do composite sticks improve the speed of your shot?
They flex more than traditional wood sticks. The flex allows the energy in the stick to be transferred to the puck. 7/2/2018
5
What do the flex numbers mean?
7/2/2018
6
What do the flex numbers mean?
A high flex number is more stiff and harder to flex. It would be used by large, strong players. (Shea Weber used a 130 flex in the NHL skills competition this year.) A low flex number is easier to flex. Kessel uses an 80 flex. 7/2/2018

Explain what the Butterfly technique is for a goaltender?

8
Explain what the Butterfly technique is for a goaltender?
The goalie goes down on low shots with his pads across the ice to cover the bottom of the net. 7/2/2018

Which is faster, a goalie’s legs or hands and how can he improve his reaction time on a shot?

11
Which is faster, a goalie’s legs or hands and how can he improve his reaction time on a shot?
The hands are 2 x faster, and if a goalie inhales the increased oxygen is believed to slightly increase reaction time. 7/2/2018

Wrist Shot Compare accurate shooters to inaccurate shooters

13
Wrist Shot Compare accurate shooters to inaccurate shooters
Accurate shooters have more follow through Inaccurate shooters (like Normie) Lock their wrists Inaccurate shooters have less balance 7/2/2018

15
What are the 2 phases to a skating stride?
Push and the Recoil 7/2/2018
16
What is our motto re improving your forward stride speed?
Hint: I wrote it on the screen and it didn’t want to come off! 7/2/2018
17
What is our motto re improving your forward stride speed?
Get Low Toe Flick (means to extend the toe at the end of the stride) Heal to Toe (means to bring the glide leg back into the centre of your body so that your legs come close together.) 7/2/2018

Explain what the Rocker Radius is: Explain what the hollow is:
7/2/2018
19
Explain what the hollow is:
The hollow is the radius from edge to edge, measured in inches. 7/2/2018
20
Explain what the Rocker Radius is:
The rocker radius is the radius from the front to the back of the skate measured in feet. 7/2/2018
21
Explain which players should have duller hollow like a 5/8”
7/2/2018
22
Explain which players should have duller hollow like a 5/8”
Heavier players and players who are good on their edges benefit from a duller hollow. It gives them more glide. In other words all NHL and OHL players should have a 5/8 or at least a duller hollow than the tradition ½”. 7/2/2018
23
Explain which players should have sharper hollow like a ½ or 3/8”
7/2/2018
24
Explain which players should have sharper hollow like a ½ or 3/8”
Inexperience skaters and very light players need the extra edge to bite the ice. 7/2/2018

26
Off ice training: What are Gary Roberts’s Rules to Training?
1. There is no offseason This means when you hang up the skates for the summer, you need to train off ice 2. Undo the Damage from the season with strength and power workouts 3. Don’t over train. This means keep your heart rate down while working on strength. 4. Rest between exercizes and Hydrate 5. Work on speed every other day. 6. Refuel properly. 7/2/2018

Explain the roles of the 4 players in a 2 on 1:
Defenseman: Move the puck carrier to the poorest shooting angle that you can safely As the puck carrier shoots, position yourself to look after the rebound. Prevent the pass If the puck carrier is on his off wing, play him closer There is more stuff on your handout 7/2/2018
28
Explain the roles of the 4 players in a 2 on 1:
Forward with the Puck: Think shot as your first priority. Take the best possible angle that the d-man will give you. If you don’t have a lot to shoot at and you don’t think you can get the pass across, think low wide shot with the hope of a rebound for your teammate. More stuff on your handout. 7/2/2018
29
Explain the roles of the 4 players in a 2 on 1:
Forward without the Puck Provide width to the attack If on off-wing open up to angle yourself so that you can one time the shot or get it off fast Do not go past the net unless the puck is past the net. You need to be slightly behind the puck carrier laterally, not ahead or the defenseman will easily prevent any pass attempts to you. More stuff on your handout. 7/2/2018
30
Explain how to defend a 1 on 1. Be specific.
Defenders should align their bodies with the bodies of their opponents so that they have what we call inside positioning. If you are defending while skating backwards, your outside shoulder is aligned with their inside shoulder. In other words, the attacker is closer to the boards than you are. You want to direct him towards the outside, giving him a poorer shooting angle. If the attacker is coming right down the middle, you need to align head on. 7/2/2018

Explain the role of the 5 Defenders in your defensive Zone
7/2/2018
32
Explain the role of the 5 Defenders in your defensive Zone
D1: Is responsible to put pressure on the puck carrier in the corner. D2 : is responsible for net front coverage. F1: is the support player for D1. If the puck squirts loose, F1 is ready to take it. If the puck heads to the opposite corner, F1 slides across and remains in that same support role. F2 is responsible for the high slot (the middle of the ice) F3 fills in the puck side of the box 7/2/2018

34
5 things to do when placing a check on a player
Skate with a wide base and bent knees Keep your stick low Lock your arm Take away their hands Place your knee between their legs Use your rear and extend it to control the attacker Rotate the attacker so their arms and shoulders are towards the boards 7/2/2018

What are Hockey Canada’s 4 Steps for teaching Checking?
Body checking is taught in a 4 step progression. Step 1. is Positioning and Angling Step 2. is Stick Checks Step 3. is Contact Confidence and Body Contact Step 4 is Body Checking 7/2/2018
