1 Homework Using the QR code
Watch the Homework video and answer the questions for Lesson 8.

2 Big names in Science Marie Curie ~ youngest woman in Science to win a Nobel Prize (aged 36) in Physics and 1911 for Chemistry Aage Bohr ~ Nobel prize for Physics for detailing the structure of the atomic nucleus Ernest Rutherford, the father of nuclear physics ~ Nobel prize for Chemistry 1908

3 Why has the atomic model changed over time?
All pupils will be able to (Baseline): Describe how and why the atomic model has changed over time. Most pupils will be able to (Further): Compare the differences between the plum-pudding model of the atom and the nuclear model of the atom. Some pupils will be able to (Challenge): Describe why the new evidence from the scattering experiment led to a change in the atomic model.

5 The plum pudding model A cloud of positive charge with tiny electrons found inside it and an overall charge of 0.

6 The nuclear model

7 The atomic model

8 Task (using the worksheet)
Read pages of the textbook and answer the questions on the worksheet Baseline: Start at Qu 1 Further: Start at Qu 4 Challenge: Start at Qu 6

9 Plenary Questions: Baseline: Describe the differences between the plum-pudding model, nuclear model and atomic model Further: Describe the experimental techniques involved in the history of the atomic model. Challenge: Explain how the experimental techniques work.

10 Baseline: Thomson (plum pudding model) said that atoms consisted of a cloud of positive charge with tiny negative charged electrons. The overall charge balanced out though. Whereas, Rutherford, Geiger and Marsden (nuclear model) found that the cloud of positive charge must be concentrated at a tiny spot in the centre (the nucleus) and the electrons must orbit the nucleus. Bohr (atomic model) then revised this when he found that electrons are in different shells with fixed energy levels.
