8th Grade Science Today’s Schedule Friday, October 26, 2012 Do Now Weather Data Collection Weather Presentations Weather Tool Card Sort Pre-AP Homework Grade-Level Homework Weather Packet Homework Due Friday! Vocabulary Essential Question atmosphere weather high pressure ocean currents barometer wind weather map low pressure air pressure meteorologist cold front air mass warm front What drives convection, wind, and currents? How do global patterns of atmospheric movement influence local weather?

3 8th Grade Science Today we will… Friday, October 26, 2012 8.10(A): recognize that the sun provides the energy that drive convection within the atmosphere and oceans, producing winds and ocean currents. 8.10(B): identify how global patterns of atmospheric movement influence local weather using weather maps that show high and low pressures and fronts.

4 8th Grade Science DO NOW Friday, October 26, 2012 On page __, complete the following questions as a table. Each color will do a question and then you will share your answers with your table. Explain how the blue water and red water move in the container. Why do you think they move this way? If the water represents the ocean, how does the water in the ocean move? Recall that thermal energy moves in a predictable pattern from warmer to cooler areas. How is this concept illustrated in this model? Does this model show energy distribution by radiation, conduction, or convection?

5 Weather Data Collection
8th Grade Science Weather Data Collection Friday, October 26, 2012 Each group will collect data on one weather characteristic. Record data on weather chart. EVERYONE describe the sky conditions. After data collection, groups will present their findings to the class. Table 1: Wind Speed Table 5: Air Pressure Table 2: Wind Speed Table 6: Temperature Table 3: Wind Direction Table 4: Humidity
