4. Backup Exec Licensing Process Changes
All Entitlement Certificates sent via , will include live activation License Keys, as well as the quantity of entitlements.
This global change applies to new purchases; upgrades; as well as boxed product.
New product purchased with a Maintenance contract will need to go to the licensing portal to register the serial number and activate support contract and provide Symantec with their technical contacts. (
Box (License in a Box) products (with or without maintenance) will ship with live keys included in the box. For Box products with maintenance, users will need to go to the licensing portal to activate the support contract.

The notification letter will contain the BE 12 License Keys
The notification letter will also contain the serial number for downloading the new software via Fileconnect
Customers who do not receive the VU Notification for any reason need to contact Customer Care
How will customers obtain BE 12 license keys if they do not have active maintenance as of Feb 18th 2008?
They would need to buy Version upgrades for the core BE licenses and all agents/options.

However - There was a change in upgrade pricing strategy for Version Upgrades and Competitive Upgrades .  We went to a standard 40% off for Version Upgrades and 25 % off for Competitive Upgrades.
Version Upgrades are used to upgrade from any previous version of Backup Exec to 11d.
Competitive Upgrades are used to upgrade from any equivalent competitive backup software to Backup Exec 11d.
Most customers just want to know what kind of deal they are getting for upgrade pricing.  In the past, we could not answer that question because our upgrade pricing was not consistent across core/agent/options.  Now we can tell customers they get 40% or 25 % off.  This was outlined in the announcement letter.

This is the pricing for Backup Exec System Recovery 7.0. Some important items to note:
BESR Server Edition – There is no increase in price. It is still $1095.
BESR SBS Edition – There has been a $100 USD MSRP increase in price. This is due to the addition of the Exchange Retrieve Option, since MSFT SBS Standard and Premium editions both include Exchange.
BESR Desktop Edition – No increase in price
BESR Manager – This is priced at $1495 USD MSRP. It is not needed on every server, only on the system that will be acting as the central management system or server.
BESR Exchange Retrieve Option – This is priced at $995 USD MSRP per instance. Please note that it is priced the same as the Backup Exec for Windows Servers Agent for Exchange. So the desire here is to deliver price parity for protecting Exchange. Also note that while this Option can be installed on a Windows server, desktop or laptop, it is priced Per Exchange Server – meaning customers must purchase one license of the Exchange Retrieve Option for every Exchange server that they wish to be able to get granular recovery for that we talked about earlier.
BESR Recovery Starter Kit – Providing a savings of 25%, this bundle provides 5 Server Edition licenses, 1 Manager, and 1 Exchange Retrieve Option at $5,995 USD MSRP
BE SRO – Specifically designed for and targeted at the Backup Exec for Windows Servers install base, the new Backup Exec System Recovery Option is priced to move at $695 USD MSRP.
