A lobster creeps 10 m along the sea bed in 5 minutes. What is its average speed? A snake slithers up a giant sand dune at 2 m/s. How far will it have moved in a minute? A car changes from 10 m/s to 30 m/s in 8 seconds. What is its acceleration? A motorcyclist accelerates at 3 m/s2 for 9s, starting from rest. What is the motorcyclist's final speed? Equations - give the equation and units linking: Average speed, distance, time Acceleration, change in velocity, time taken Define - Average speed Instantaneous speed Acceleration Velocity Distance Displacement Momentum Typical speeds – state with units Walking Running Cycling Speed of sound in air Vectors and scalars – define each and give 3 pairs of quantities Distance time graphs – label each line. Explain how to calculate speed using different parts of the graph. Velocity time graphs – label each line. Explain how to calculate acceleration, distance and displacement using different parts of the graph.

How far will it have moved in a minute? 2m/s x 60s = 120m A car changes from 10 m/s to 30 m/s in 8 seconds. What is its acceleration? 20m/s / 8s = 2.5m/s2 A motorcyclist accelerates at 3 m/s2 for 9s, starting from rest. What is the motorcyclist's final speed? 3m/s2 x 9s = 27m/s Equations - give the equation and units linking: Average speed, distance, time Distance (m) = speed (m/s) x time (s) Acceleration, change in velocity, time taken Acceleration (m/s2) = change in velocity (m/s) / time (s) Define - Average speed - a measure of the distance traveled in a given period of time Instantaneous speed - speed at a particular instant in time Acceleration- the rate at which an object changes its speed. Velocity - the speed of something in a given direction Distance – how far something travels, scalar quantity with no direction Displacement – an objects overall change in position, vector quantity with direction Momentum - the tendency of the object to keep moving in the same direction Typical speeds – state with units Walking 5km/h Running 12km/h Cycling 15km/h Speed of sound in air 340 m/s Vectors and scalars – define each and give 3 pairs of quantities Vector has magnitude and direction, Scalar has only magnitude Displacement + Distance Speed + Velocity Distance time graphs – label each line. Explain how to calculate speed using different parts of the graph. Gradient of line = speed (change in distance / change in time) Velocity time graphs – label each line. Explain how to calculate acceleration, distance and displacement using different parts of the graph. Area under line = distance travelled, Gradient of line = acceleration
