Unit 1 Pre & Post Test Name the 4 transformations. 1. 2. 3. 4.
Describe (in detail) and include the rules or process for each of the 4 transformations. Name and describe the different types of angles that are formed when parallel lines are cut by a transversal. *Be sure to identify the angle relationship which are congruent or supplementary. 5. 6.

Vocabulary Term Meaning Picture/Example Transformation A rule, to be denotes by F, that assigns each point P of the plane a unique point which is denoted by F(P) Congruent Same shape and same size. A sequence of basic rigid motions, (rotations, reflections, translations of the plane) Corresponding Sides and angles that have the same relative positions in geometric figures. Interior Angles Pairs of angles formed when a third line (a transversal) crosses two other lines. These angles are between the other two lines. Exterior Angles Pairs of angles formed when a third line (a transversal) crosses two other lines. These angles are outside the other two lines. Linear Pair Adjacent, supplementary angles. Excluding their common side, a linear pair forms a straight line. Translation A transformation in which every point of the pre-image moves in the same direction by the same amount to form the image. A translation is also referred to as a "slide". A translation creates a similar and congruent figure. Dilation similarity transformation in which a figure is enlarged or reduced using a scale factor ≠ 0, without altering the center. Scale Factor The ratio of any two corresponding lengths of the sides of two similar figures.

Vocabulary Term Meaning Picture/Example Similar Figures Figures that have the same shape but not necessarily the same size. Reflection A transformation in which each point is mapped onto its reflection image over a line or plane. Rotation A transformation in which every point of the preimage is rotated by a given angle about a point (in two dimensions). Transversal A line that crosses two or more lines Supplementary when two angles add up to 180 degrees.

Learning Targets MCC8.G.1 Verify experimentally the properties of rotations, reflections, and translations: a. Lines are taken to lines, and line segments to line segments of the same length. b. Angles are taken to angles of the same measure. c. Parallel lines are taken to parallel lines. • I can use the properties of translations, rotations, and reflections on line segments, angles, parallel lines or geometric figures. • I can show and explain two figures are congruent using transformations (explaining the series of transformations used) 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. 4. Model with mathematics. 5. Use appropriate tools strategically. standards for mathematical practice
