2 The 5 SOLO Stages Pre-structural: “I don’t understand this.”
Uni-structural: “I understand one aspect of this.” Multi-structural: “I know several things about this” Relational: “I can see connections between the information I have gathered.” Extended-abstract: “I can look at the bigger picture and explain why this is important. I can reflect and evaluate.”

Pre-structural? “I don’t understand.” For example: What do you know about the Olympics? Err….. What?? Pre-structural

Uni-structural? “I understand one aspect of this.” For example: Define Identify What do you know about the Olympics? It’s a sports event! Uni-structural

Multi-structural? Several countries take part There are lots of different sports There are bronze, silver and gold medals Define Describe List “I know several things about this.” For example: What do you know about the Olympics? Multi-structural

Relational? Explain causes Sequence Analyse Relate “I can see the connections.” For example: Each country enters a team of athletes, all of whom are the best in that country at a particular sport. The teams compete against each other and the best three in each sport win the medals. What do you know about the Olympics? Relational

Extended abstract? “I can look at the bigger picture and explain why this is important.” “I can reflect and evaluate.” For example: Extended abstract Evaluate Reflect Imagine The Olympics is a fantastic event because it brings athletes from all over the world together. People from each country can get involved by supporting their team, which gives them a feeling of national identity and pride. What do you know about the Olympics? I think the Olympics has been good for the UK because it has shown the world that we can organise this huge event brilliantly. It has inspired me to become a success in the future!

8 Uni-structural Write one fact about the Olympics onto your Post-It note.

9 Multi-structural Now stick your Post-It note on the board.
While you’re there, have a look at everyone else’s points.

10 Relational In pairs, come up to the board and pick 3 Post-Its that have something in common. For example, you might pick 3 that are all about one particular sport or country. Stick your 3 Post-Its onto a sheet of paper, draw lines between them and label the connections. Relational challenge! Combine your 3 separate points into a short paragraph that makes sense. Hint: You will need to use connectives such as: because, so, however

11 Extended abstract Add at least one sentence to your paragraph that begins with one of the following: “The Olympics are important because…” “The Olympics made me think about…”
