(c) Schematic representation of synovial membrane histology. Among the macrophage-like and fibroblast-like synovial cells are collagen fibers and other typical components of connective tissue. Surface cells have no basement membrane or junctional complexes denoting an epithelium, despite the superficial resemblance.
