Backyards BEGINNING ESL LESSON
Backyards of Houses for ESL Students - After you have practiced the vocabulary words with the class, have a student give the presentation by saying the words and describing the pictures. If the student is shy, ask a few simple questions. BEGINNING ESL LESSON

backyard This backyard has a small tree. Ask your students if they have a tree in their backyard.

grass Ask your students who cuts their lawn.

hose Explain and demonstrate how to roll up a garden hose by wrapping it around your arm.

lawn mower There are many types of lawn mowers: electric, gas, push, and the kind you sit on and drive.

fence This wooden fence has flowers growing beside it.

patio Patios are usually concrete or made from slabs of rocks. They often have a fence surrounding them.

patio furniture Patio furniture is easy to clean. It is often made from plastic or wood. This patio table has an umbrella for shade.

grill Barbeques are used to cook food like hot dogs and hamburgers.

pool Pools need to have a fence around them to keep children safe.

tomatoes This woman has a garden in her backyard. She just picked some ripe tomatoes.

roses Many people have roses in their backyards. Roses are easy to grow and they smell good.

pond Ponds are relaxing to look at, but they attract mosquitoes.

swing set Children spend hours playing on swing sets. Some swing sets have slides.

toys for children Children get a lot of exercise by playing with toys outside in the backyard.

doghouse Some people keep their dogs in their backyard for protection.

birdhouse If you hang a birdhouse on a tree branch, birds will build a nest inside of it.

birdbath This bird is going to drink water from the birdbath.
