1 Animal Adaptations & Survival
SPI

2 Learning Target I can identify physical and behavioral adaptations that enable animals such as, amphibians, reptiles, birds, fish and mammals to survive in a particular environment. Repeat after me.

3 What is an adaptation? 1.) Adaptation- any characteristic that helps an organism survive in its environment.

4 Which organism is responsible for that?
2.) Organisms that adapt the best- will reproduce and survive 3.) Remember in reproduction, organisms pass down traits to their offspring. NOT BREAK DOWN PLANT & ANIMAL MATERIAL!!!! Which organism is responsible for that?

5 4.) Physical Adaptations- changes to an organism’s internal or external structure. *Sometimes known as Structural Adaptation. It involves some parts of an animal’s body like teeth, body covering, and movement, color, length of limbs, strong jaws, hollow bones, thick fur, and pouches for babies

6 Why would an animal need this physical adaptation?
Reptiles have dry, scaly skin that is waterproof. Dolphins and whales both have the adaptation of being able to hold their breath for a long period of time. The male peacock displays tall feathers toward the female peacock.

7 Why would an animal need this physical adaptation?
Bears have different fur colors depending on their ecosystem. Birds have different beaks. What does that tell us? The porcupine and puffer fish have the adaptation of pushing our their quails or spines, respectively.

8 Why would an animal need this physical adaptation?
Ducks have webbed feet. Marsupials are pouched mammals that give birth to partially developed offspring. Wings/Flying Feathers Sharp Claws

9 What are behavioral adaptations?
5.) Instinct : a way of acting or behaving that an animal is born with; the organism inherits the behavior. 6.) Behavioral Adaptations- how an organism responds to its environment.

10 What are behavioral adaptations?
Behavioral adaptations help organisms: 1.) find food 2.) defend themselves 3.) maintain certain body temperatures 4.) attract mates 5.) take care of their offspring 6.) acting on instinct

11 Can you describe these behavioral adaptations?
Caring Attract Mates Finding Food Protection Maintaining Body Temperature

12 What are adaptations to climate?
7.) Climate Adaptations- help organisms survive in their environment 1.) body temperature (extreme heat; large ears to allow heat to escape; humps to store fat when food is scarce; insulation-blubber; penguins huddling together.) 2.) seasonal changes-migration & hibernation 3.)

13 What adaptations do predators and prey have?
How Prey Escape How Predators Catch Prey

14 What adaptations do predators and prey have?
8.) Camouflage- when an organism uses patterns, shape, or color to blend in with the environment

15 What adaptations do predators and prey have?
9.) Protective Coloration- a type of camouflage in which the color of an animal helps it blend in with its background.

16 What adaptations do predators and prey have?
10.) Protective Resemblance- when an organism matches the color, shape, and texture of an environment

17 What is mimicry? 11.) Mimicry – helps protect an animal against predators by its resemblance to an unpleasant animal. Example owl butterfly and an owl. Coral is on the right (poisonous) & King is on the left (nonpoisonous) Red next to yellow= poisonous

18 What is mimicry? 12.) Mimicry helps trick the prey into believing that the animal is harmless.

19 Let’s Review 1.) Which adaptation would you expect to find in marine mammals that live in extremely cold environments? A. large ears B. thin fur coat C. thick layers of blubber D. down feathers

20 Let’s Review 2.) A characteristic that helps an organism survive in an environment is a(n) A. trait B. style C. adaptation D. gene

21 Let’s Review 3.) A type of camouflage in which the color of the animal blends in with its background is called A. protective coloration B. protective resemblance C. adaptation D. mimicry

22 Let’s Review 4.) A butterfly looking like a bad tasting butterfly is an example of ______________. 5.) What type of foot would you assume was best adapted for swimming?

23 Let’s Review 6.) Some marine organisms like dolphins have streamlined bodies that allow them to A. breathe underwater B. maintain a constant body temperature C. move swiftly in the water D. communicate with other dolphins

24 Let’s Review 7.) Which adaptation would you allow an organism to burrow underground? A. small eyes B. hairless tail C. thick fur coat D. large paws with sharp claws

25 Let’s Review 8.) Which adaptation do marsupials have that other mammals lack? A. it is warm-blooded B. it has a pouch to carry its young C. it lays eggs D. it has a skeleton made of cartilage

26 Homework 5 Vocabulary Words are DUE TUESDAY! These are on pages Write them on a piece of notebook paper OR flashcards. Your choice!

27 Homework Tuesday-Thursday Assignment: DUE FRIDAY!! Study your vocabulary words. Read the “Adaptations” article. COMPLETE the graphic organizer and ANSWER the question on the back.

28 Create a Creature 1. You will list 5 REAL animals that exist today. You will name at least ONE trait that helps them survive in an environment. 2. Then, you will create your own creature. You will draw your animal. 3. You will label the creature’s traits. 4. You will explain why you gave it the traits you did using complete sentences on the lines below your creature.
