1 Evaluating Algebraic Expressions
Lesson 6.04

2 After completing this lesson, you will be able to say:
I can substitute specific values for variables. I can evaluate algebraic expressions by using substitution and order of operations. I can evaluate algebraic expressions, including those that arise from real-world problems

3 Evaluating Expressions
Substitution means replacing one thing with something else You can substitute for the variables when you know their values. Then you follow the order of operations to simplify the expression

4 Evaluating Expressions
Let’s use substitution to evaluate the expression 5x + 100, if x equals 7 Since you know the value of the variable is 7, you can replace the letter x with the number 7. That’s all there is to substitution The algebraic expression is now a numerical expression and can be easily simplified. To evaluate the expression, follow the order of operations.

5 Example 2 Evaluate the expression 2x2 + 4y, when x = 8 and y = 1.5

6 Try it

7 Check your work

8 Now that you completed this lesson, you should be able to say:
I can substitute specific values for variables. I can evaluate algebraic expressions by using substitution and order of operations. I can evaluate algebraic expressions, including those that arise from real-world problems
