The word Geography comes from the Greek word geographia which means “to describe the earth.”
Scientists look at the properties that make up the earth. Historians look at events over time on the earth. Geographers, however, look at the use of space on the earth and the interactions that take place there. They look for patterns and connections between people and the land they live on. Geography is the study of the distribution and interaction of physical and human features on the earth.
5
The Two Branches of Geography
Physical geography focuses on the study of Earth’s physical features. Human geography, or cultural geography, studies human activities and their relationship to the environment Which picture represents Physical geo & which represents human geo?
6
Geography is divided into smaller subject areas
Geography is divided into smaller subject areas. One example is Cartography or map making.
7
Examples of Human Geo: *Urban Geography *Cultural Geography *Economic Geography *Historical Geography *Political Geography Examples of Physical Geo: *Hydrology *Glaciology *Climatology *Oceanography *Environmental Geography
8
Contemporary Tools Global Positioning System (GPS)
System that accurately determines the precise position of something on Earth
9
Contemporary Tools Geography Information System (GIS)
Is a computer system that captures, stores, analyzes and displays geographic data. Data is stored in layers that can be compared to show relationships. Data can be overlaid in on GIS from a variety of different sources through a process known as a MASHUP.

Human Environment Interaction
Location Absolute & Relative Place Site & Situation Regions Formal, Functional & Perceptual Movement Diffusion Human Environment Interaction Adapt, Alter & Use Where is it? How do we coexist? What’s it like? Why there? 5 Themes of Geo How is it the same or different? How is it connected?
11
Location Cartography is the science of mapmaking.
Maps serve two purposes… As a reference tool to identify an object’s absolute and relative location. As a communications tool to convey the distribution of human activities or physical features.
12
Latitude, Longitude and location
Lines on globes and maps provide information that can help you locate places. These lines cross one another, forming a grid system called The Geographic Grid. It is made up of Latitude & Longitude lines, helps geographers find absolute location.
13
Lines of Latitude run around the globe horizontally, measuring the distance North and South of the Equator. The Equator is measured at 0° latitude, while the Poles lie at latitudes 90° N (north) and 90° S (south). In addition to the Equator the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn are also lines of latitude. Lines of Latitude are sometimes called Parallels because they are parallel to each other. Measured in degrees N or S from the Equator
14
Lines of Longitude run from pole to pole
Lines of Longitude run from pole to pole. Measuring the distance East and West of the Prime Meridian. Which is why they are sometimes called Meridians. Lines of Longitude also help mark the time of day.
