JK. Rowling The woman who started it all...
JK Rowling first came up with the idea of Harry Potter in She was on a long train ride from Manchester to London when she began forming the idea in her mind. The train ride was delayed for four hours and Jo didn’t have a pen. Being the shy person that she was, she didn’t want to ask for one, so nothing was written down that day. In 2006, JK Rowling finished the final book of the Harry Potter Series, Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows. It was published in July, It soon became one of the world’s fastest selling books. Jo said that this book is her favourite of the series and that it made her both sad and happy. Jo said that she will continue writing, but there is little chance that she will continue the Harry Potter series. Joanne (Jo) Kathleen Rowling was born on July 31st in Chipping Sodury, England. Her mother, Anne Rowling, gave birth to Jo’s sister, Dianna two years later. Jo states that one of the reason she began creating stories was to keep her sister entertained. JK Rowling immediately began writing Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone in However, the book wasn’t published until After the first few weeks of publication, book sales started to take off. In 1998, Warner Bros requested permission to turn the books into movies. JK. Rowling

Harry Potter Harry James Potter, son of James and Lily Potter, lives with his Uncle Vernon, Aunt Petunia, and cousin Dudley. At two years old his parents were murdered by the darkest wizard of all time, Lord Voldemort. When Harry turns eleven he finds out he is a wizard and is accepted into Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry is a skinny boy with unruly jet black hair and emerald green eyes. Circular glasses sit on his face and a scar in the shape of a lightening bolt marks his forehead as a reminder that Lord Voldemort once tried to murder him but failed. Harry is courageous, brave, and willing to do anything for his friends and family, even die for them. He is a great wizard.
5
Hermione Granger Hermione has brown bushy hair and somewhat buck teeth. She is kind, clever, and cares for her friends and family. She tries to keep Harry and Ron out of trouble but sometimes she joins in on the trouble. Hermione is truly one of the brightest witches of her age. Hermione Granger is one Harry’s best friends. She is a muggle (non-magical people) born witch. Even though she is muggle born, she is one of the top witches at Hogwarts.
6
Ron Weasley Ron Weasley, son of Arthur and Molly, and brother of Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred, George, and Ginny. The Weasley’s don’t have a lot of money or material things, but they are content with the way their lives are. Family is all that is really important to them. Ron is skinny and tall, and like all the other Weasley’s, has flaming red orange hair with freckles scattered across his cheeks and nose. Ron is Harry and Hermione’s best friend. He is loyal, trustworthy, and would do anything for his family and friends.

Significance of The Title:
The reason the book was called Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban is because the book is about how Harry’s godfather, Sirius Black, who is a supposed mass murderer, broke out of Azkaban Prison.

5 Main Events: 1. Harry Hears about Sirius For The First Time:
Harry first heard about a murderer that was on the loose when he was at his Aunt and Uncle’s place on the muggle (non-magical people) news. He learns more about Sirius from a newspaper from the wizarding world called “The Daily Prophet.” He finds out that Sirius is Harry’s godfather and that he is out to get Harry to do the job that Voldemort failed to complete, to kill him. 5 Main Events:

2. Harry Encounters Dementors For The First Time:
The first time Harry comes in contact with a Dementor is when him, Hermione, Ron, and Professor Lupin, the defense against the dark arts professor, who is sleeping at the time, are sitting in a train that is taking them to Hogwarts when all of the sudden the train comes to a halt. At first they think it’s because they are at Hogwarts but that thought is quickly discarded out of their minds when the train becomes eerily silent and all the lights go out. Lupin immediately wakes up from the commotion that is going on the train. As Lupin lights up the room with his wand a cloaked figure enters into their compartment. The Dementor then begins to suck out the happy memories from everyone in the compartment. As the Dementor is doing that Harry faints, but before he fully blacks out he hears a distant scream. The scream wasn’t from anyone in the compartment, the scream was a memory, a memory of his mother screaming while being attacked by Lord Voldemort.

4. Professor Lupin Promises to Teach Harry How to Defend Himself Against Dementors
After defense against the dark arts class one day, Professor Lupin tells Harry to stay after class. Lupin discusses the Quidditch (a sport played in the Wizarding world) that Harry’s house, Gryffindor, played against Hufflepuff. Unfortunately Gryffindor lost because some Dementors showed up resulting in Harry fainting and falling off his broom. Harry questions Lupin as to why the Dementors affect him so much. Lupin tells Harry that they affect him so much because Harry has experienced a lot of trauma in his past and the Dementors feed off of that. Lupin promises to teach Harry an advanced spell called “Expecto Patronum” to defend himself from the Dementors.

It’s exam time at Hogwarts and Harry has completed all his exams, all but one. He still has his divination exam to do. He meets with Professor Trelawney in her tower to do his exam. After he finishes his exam Harry goes to leave but before he can get out the door a harsh voice speaks to him saying, ‘it will happen tonight,’ Harry turns around to see Professor Trelawney sitting rigidly in her arm chair with her eyes unfocused. She continues to say that the Dark Lord’s servant who has been chained up for the past twelve years and will rejoin Voldemort that night. 4. 5. Harry Confronts Sirius Black in The Shrieking Shack
As Harry, Ron, and Hermione are walking across Hogwarts grounds to get back to the school, Ron’s pet rat, Scabbers, starts trying to escape out of Ron’s hands. He escapes and Hermione’s ginger cat, Crookshanks, starts to chase the rat. Ron manages to catch Scabbers but as he putting him back into his pocket a large, black dog tackles Ron to the ground. The dog grabs Ron by the ankle and drags him down a tunnel that leads to a place called the Shrieking Shack in Hogsmeade Village. Hermione and Harry go after Ron and the dog. They go through the tunnel into the Shrieking Shack and find Ron, who proceeds to tell them that it was all a trap, that Sirius is an Animagus, (a wizard/witch who can turn into an animal) that he was the dog. Harry and Hermione turn around and come face to face with the mass murderer himself, Sirius Black. 5. Harry Confronts Sirius Black in The Shrieking Shack

Setting: The setting for the book is at Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. The time period is the 1990’s.

Genre: Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban is a mix of different genres. It’s a mix of fantasy, betrayal, and adventure, Fantasy because Hogwarts, witches, wizards, and all the other magical creatures are not real. Betrayal because of broken trust between some of the characters, and adventure because the book follows Harry as he runs around Hogwarts having different showdowns with his enemies.

Favourite Passages: ‘You know that day we fought the Bogart?’
‘Yes,’ Lupin said slowly. ‘Why Didn’t you let me fight it?’ said Harry abruptly. Lupin raised his eyebrows, ‘I would have thought that was obvious, Harry,’ he said, sounding surprised. Harry, who had expect Lupin to deny that he’d done any such thing, was taken aback. ‘Why?’ he said again. ‘Well,’ Lupin said frowning slightly, ‘I assumed that if the Bogart faced you, it would assume the shape of Lord Voldemort.’ Harry stared. Not only was this the last answer he’d expected, but Lupin said Voldemort’s name. The only person Harry had ever heard say the name aloud (apart from himself) was Professor Dumbledore. ‘Clearly, I was wrong,’ said Lupin, still frowning at Harry. ‘But I didn’t think it a good idea for Lord Voldemort to materialise in the staff room. I imagined that people would panic.’ ‘I did think of Voldemort first,’ said Harry honestly. ‘But then I-I remembered those Dementors.’ ‘I see,’ said Lupin thoughtfully. ‘Well, well... I’m impressed.’ He smiled slightly at the look of surprise on Harry’s face. ‘That suggests that what you fear most of all is – fear. very wise, Harry.’ Harry didn’t know what to say to that, so he drank some more tea.

Favourite Passage: ‘GO!’ Harry and Hermione shouted together.
Black wheeled Buckbeak around, facing the open sky. ‘We’ll see each other again,’ he said. ‘You are truly your father’s son, Harry...’ He squeezed Buckbeak’s sides with his heels. Harry and Hermione jumped back as the enormous wings rose once more... The Hippogriff took off into the air... He and his rider became smaller and smaller as Harry gazed after them... Then a cloud drifted across the moon...they were gone.

There are a few themes I found in this novel, but one of the major themes that really stuck out for me was fear. Dementors are frightful creatures that you don’t ever want to come in contact with. They suck all the happy memories out of you so you are left with nothing but the bad. Whenever Harry comes in contact with them he recalls the memory of his mother and father being murdered by Lord Voldemort before fainting. Horrible memories are enough to create fear in itself. I don’t think that it was the Dementors so much that Harry was afraid as it was experiencing his horrible memories of his parents being murdered. When the Dementors suck all your happy memories out of you, it gets rid of you who are, so I think the book teaches us not to define people based on what our fears are. Theme:

Overall Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban is truly an unforgettable story. I could read this novel over and over again yet still find myself not being able to put it down. It’s a book that anyone can enjoy, children, teenagers, even adults! The story is full of laughter, joy, betrayal, and mischief. I recommend you read the first two books of the series before you jump right into this one. It’d make more sense, but trust me, once you start reading them you will want to stick with Harry until the very end.
