Laxmi Kumari, Sandhya Gupta, Manphool Singh, Geetanjali Singh College of Nursing, All India institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi Introduction India is home to 19% of world’s child population. According to 2011 census, adolescents [age 10 year to 19 years] constitute around 20% of total population of India. Child maltreatment is generally under reported worldwide. The WHO in 2002 estimated that 73 million boys and 150 million girls under the age of 18 years had experienced various forms of sexual violence. Fig 4: Pie diagram showing age at which it happened 1st time (n=50) Fig 1: Pie diagram showing, Who was the abuser ? (n=50) Objective To assess the abuse and awareness of abuse. To find out the effect of awareness program on the knowledge of adolescents. Discussion The younger age group is more effected. 1 Males are the most common abusers. 2 The usual abusers are the familial ones rather than strangers. 7 The teaching intervention was effective. 6 Material & Methods Design: Cross-sectional Survey Research setting: Sathi centre Kalyanpuri, New Delhi. Sample : 50 adolescent boys. Tools : Subject data sheet for general and selected variables. The Children’s Knowledge of Abuse Questionnaire: (Leslie M. Tutty 2003) Internal consistency 0.87 and Test-retest reliability is 0.88. Conclusion Male child is equally prone to sexual abuse. It is the known persons who abused most. A good educational background and positive family support can minimize the incidence of child abuse. Educating children on child sexual abuse is effective and plays an important role in building up a strong healthy future of the country Fig 2: Bar diagram showing – How did you feel at the time when it happened ? (n=50) Results 92% adolescents reported that the abuser was a male. 38% adolescents reported that were asked to keep it secret. 32% informed the incidence to their mother, while 42% never revealed this to anyone. 30% reported that the age of the abuser would be between 40-50years while 44% has no idea about the age of the abuser. The mean score of subjects on awareness questionnaire is 20.6 ± 2.96, ranges from (12-25). A significant difference found between pre-test (20.6±2.96) and post-test (28.5±2.02), p-value of Implications For family members: Parents need to learn how to give awareness regarding abuse and its prevention. They must listen carefully their concerns and enhance trustful relationship. For health professionals: While taking history of child professional must be aware of signs of abuse and investigate accordingly. For Schools: Teachers need to be trained in prevention and management of child abuse, and it must be included in curriculum. Fig 3: Bar diagram showing has an adult or older child ever forced you ?
