THE DANGERS OF A SINGLE STORY
3 HOUR EXAM PAPER QUESTION ONE: FILMS (100 MARKS) QUESTION TWO: POETRY (100 MARKS) QUESTION THREE: INDEPENDENT READING : NOVELS/ SHORT STORY (100 MARKS) THEME: THE DANGERS OF A SINGLE STORY
3
EXAMPLE FROM FIRST TERM (QUESTION ONE)
“In 2009 the Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie gave a TED talk called The Danger of a Single Story. It was about what happens when complex human beings and situations are reduced to a single narrative: when Africans, for example, are treated solely as pitiable poor, starving victims with flies on their faces. Her point was that each individual life contains a heterogeneous compilation of stories. If you reduce people to one, you’re taking away their humanity.” (Taken from : The Danger of a Single Story by David Brooks April 9, 2016) In the light of the above quotation, discuss, in an essay of 450 – 500 words, whether the films you have chosen to study, present a single story or a multi-facetted story.

EXAMPLE FROM SECOND TERM (QUESTION THREE)
“Stereotypes lose their power when the world is found to be more complex than the stereotype would suggest. When we learn that individuals do not fit the group stereotype, then it begins to fall apart.” Ed Koch Ed Koch presents a way in which the single story can be overcome to present a fuller, more complex view of the world. By using your two independently read texts as the basis for your argument, show how Koch’s opinion, as detailed above, is explored in the texts you have read or watched.

ALWAYS A SUSPECT I get up in the morning and dress up like a gentleman – A white shirt, a tie and a suit. I walk into the street to be met by a man who tells me “to produce.” I show him the document of my existence to be scrutinised and given the nod. Then I enter the foyer of the building to have my way barred by a commissionaire “What do you want?” I trudge the city pavements side by side with “madam” who shifts her handbag from my side to the other, and looks at me with eyes that say “Ha! Ha! I know who you are; beneath those fine clothes ticks the heart of a thief.” Oswald Mtshali Use the poem as a point of departure. Consider how your chosen poems explore how different people perceive things differently , how stereotypes determine the way in which we see the world; and how poetry is then used to break down these single stories. You must refer to and show some understanding of Mtshali’s poem. You must use Mtshali’s poem as your point of departure.
