“In 2009 the Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie gave a TED talk called The Danger of a Single Story. It was about what happens when complex human beings and situations are reduced to a single narrative: when Africans, for example, are treated solely as pitiable poor, starving victims with flies on their faces.
Her point was that each individual life contains a heterogeneous compilation of stories. If you reduce people to one, you’re taking away their humanity.”

In the light of the above quotation, discuss, in an essay of 450 – 500 words, whether the films you have chosen to study, present a single story or a multi-facetted story.

GENERAL INSTRUCTION
This question expects you to refer to the following unseen poem, “Always a Suspect” by Oswald Mtshali, as a point of departure, AND to at least THREE poems from AT LEAST TWO POETS from the selection you have studied. The five poets are: T.S. Eliot, W.H. Auden, Ezra Pound, ee cummings and W.B. Yeats.
Oswald Mbuyiseni Mtshali (born 17 January 1940) is a South African poet. He has written in both Zulu and English. He studied at Columbia University. He now lives in Soweto . Read his poem, “Always a suspect” and then respond to the questions which follow.

ALWAYS A SUSPECT
I get up in the morning and dress up like a gentleman – A white shirt, a tie and a suit. I walk into the street to be met by a man who tells me “to produce.” I show him the document of my existence to be scrutinised and given the nod.
Then I enter the foyer of the building to have my way barred by a commissionaire “What do you want?” I trudge the city pavements side by side with “madam” who shifts her handbag from my side to the other, and looks at me with eyes that say “Ha! Ha! I know who you are; beneath those fine clothes ticks the heart of a thief.” Oswald Mtshali
