1
Any relationship in which two species live closely together .
Symbiosis Any relationship in which two species live closely together .
2
MUTUALISM Both species benefit
3
Hummingbird and flower
The bird receives nutrients from the flower and takes pollen from it. The flower’s reproduction is assured by the bird. The bird takes the pollen to other flowers to enable reproduction.
4
Clown fish and anemone The anemone uses its poison tentacles to protect the clown fish from predators. The clown fish protect the anemones from fishes that eat them.
5
Honeybee and flower Bee collects pollen from the flower and sips its nectar. The bee spreads the flower’s pollen to other flowers. This relationship is similar to the one between the hummingbird and the flower.
6
Plant and Fungi The plant gives carbohydrates to the fungi. The fungi give phosphate and nitrogenous compounds to the plant.
7
Ants and fungal colony Ants distribute leaves throughout the fungal colony. The fungus breaks down the leaves and gets nourishment from them. The ants get food from the fungus, in the form of food droplets.
8
One member benefits, the other is neither helped nor harmed
COMMENSALISM One member benefits, the other is neither helped nor harmed
9
Epiphytes and woody plants
Epiphytes grow on woody plants. The epiphyte does not draw any nutrients from the plant, it only uses it as a place to grow. The “host” plant is neither harmed nor helped by its presence.
10
Cattle Egret and Cattle
As cattle are foraging, they cause movement that makes insects come out of the grasses . The egrets follow the livestock and eat the insects. The cattle are unaffected by this, but they help the egrets find their meals.
11
Jelly fish and Juvenile fish
Fish, typically juveniles, swim relatively close to the jellyfish to protect them from predators. The jellyfish is not affected by the fish swimming near it and it does not cause any harm to them.
12
Barnacles and whales Barnacles provide no service to whales and do not harm them. They attach to a whale’s back and receive food particles from the water as the whale moves through it.
13
One organism lives on or inside of another organism and harms it.
PARASITISM
14
Green fungus and Maple tree
The green fungus steals energy from the maple tree. The maple tree is harmed by the fungus; the tree’s bark is deteriorating.
15
Hornworm and pupating wasps
A tomato hornworm is covered with the cocoons of braconid wasps. This causes the hornwom to die.
16
Larva and bush The larva found this bush and are using it as a host. They keep reproducing and the bush is being harmed by their presence.
17
Tick and kangaroo The tick attaches to the kangaroo’s skin and feeds on its blood and skin. The kangaroo may become ill or get diseases from the tick bite.
18
Mosquito and human When a mosquito bites a human it is acting as a parasite. The mosquito feeds from the blood of its host. An infected mosquito can carry numerous diseases to their hosts.
