The adrenal gland. The adrenal cortex and the adrenal medulla are distinct structures visible in a cross-section of the adrenal gland. The adrenal cortex has three cellular layers, the zona glomerulosa, the zona fasciculata, and the zona reticularis. The adrenal medulla is composed of chromaffin cells, which receive a rich preganglionic sympathetic innervation and a portal blood supply from the adrenal cortex.
